The History of Rock Music. Tangerine Dream: biography, discography, reviews, links
Tangerine Dream, formed in Berlino by guitarist Edgar Froese, percussionist Klaus Schulze and keyboardist Conrad Schnitzler, were among the earliest conscious explorers of a new musical universe opened by electronic instruments.
Tangerine Dream's music was born as a psychedelic journey in the heavens, and, aided by the new electronic keyboards, transformed into a contemplative survey of the universe.
Unlike the acid-rock it descended from, Tangerine Dream's "kosmische musik" was minor-key and devoid of climax.

After saying that, this album is definitely a grower especially when track 2 begins with a nice piano and flute and sets the scene for the rest of the album.
For anyone familiar with Tangerine Dream you know this is a pointer to the future so if you are into the 1970's stuff this could be a good place to make a "sharp exit".
Tangerine Dream definitely seem to be mellowing their style to a more coherent structure and more commercial pattern of frame work.

Tangerine Dream was one of the core kraut-rock groups at their inception.
This album is often considered the last gasp of a brilliant group whose level of quality would significantly plummet in the coming decade, though to be fair, I haven't ventured into their 80s material yet myself.

Exit - Tangerine Dream - Song Listings
Exit marks the beginning of a new phase in Tangerine Dream's music: Gone were the side-long, sequencer-led journeys, replaced by topical pieces that were more self-contained in scope, more contemporary in sound.
That's not to suggest that Tangerine Dream has stopped creating eerie, evocative music; both "Pilots of Purple Twilight" and the stately "Exit" will feel familiar to fans, and the opening "Kiew Mission" is a captivating commentary on nuclear war that includes vocals after a sort (a woman's voice reading locations in Russian).
Exit ends on a surprisingly dark note, the alien and foreboding "Remote Viewing." It's on this track more than any other that Tangerine Dream returns to its past, invoking Phaedra and the sequencer-driven works that followed, as if to tell fans that Exit's changes weren't the result of a new band, just a new direction.

 Tangerine Dream
Tangerine Dream began 1980 by being the first Western rock group to play on the Eastern side of the Berlin Wall (documented on the live album Pergamon, released in 1986).
The classical Greek symbolism of this album recalled the band's debut for Virgin ten years earlier, which was fitting, as it proved to be the final studio album for the label.
At the end of 1983, Tangerine Dream performed a classic concert in Warsaw, and the album taken from the performance, Poland (released not on Virgin, but on the Jive label), reveals just how ahead of their time the German trio were.

 Tangerine Dream
"Tangerine Dream" is a German group that specializes in electronic music (the members of the band strongly disagree with the New Age label).
Most albums were purely instrumental--the band's two albums to prominently feature lyrics, ''Cyclone'' (1978) and ''Tyger'' (1987) (the latter set to poems by William Blake) were met with harsh response from the fans.
Tangerine Dream signed on to Virgin Records in 1973 and released soon afterwards their famous album, ''Phaedra'' (topping charts in the United Kingdom); one of the first ever albums released by the newly-formed label.

I can only say that the team were at the zenith of their writing at the time and this is one of the four of their albums that typified an evolution in making synths both sound different and at times talk to the listener.
Tangerine Dream's 1982 release "White Eagle" was the first to give Johannes Schmoelling the major compositional credit, shared mostly with Chris Franke, with Edgar Froese taking something a back-seat for once.
The constantly changing mix of synthesiser voices, sequenced bass and haunting mellotron tones is classic Tangerine Dream at their very best, complete with huge closing string chords of almost orchestral quality (just about their last ever grand gesture of the old style, as it turned out).

It's the title of a brief composition from one of the group's strongest studio albums, Phaedra, released in 1974 at the height of their association with Virgin Records (the full title of the song is actually "Sequent C'").
The band's first album is not a good starting point for new listeners, due to its chaotic, meandering content, but it's definitely helpful in appreciating the group's career arc.

Thus, the album is an extremely polished series of compositions, and I can't say there is a song on it that I find distasteful.
Fans of earlier Tangerine Dream may find this album to their disliking, primarily because these songs do not retain the length and "space-like" quality that earlier material does.

Although the music on Exit is clearly different than the music from their peak during the mid-1970s, it is still pretty darn good and is certainly one of their better albums from the 1980s.
In many ways, this album marks a turning point in the band's output, bridging the large-scale, freer-form works of their past with the more meticulously honed and technically impressive works that were to follow.

Releasing albums that featured long tracks, it was groundbreaking music that quickly caught the ear of UK Disc Jockey John Peel and Virgin Records boss Richard Branson.
With the exit of Schroyder and the addition of new guy Peter Baumann, they recorded the legendary and groundbreaking album ‘Phaedra’ for Virgin Records, with a montage of Mellotrons and sequencers amid layers of synthesizer layers, melodies and effects that would characterise the group’s sound throughout the seventies.
Several soundtracks and many new albums followed, as did several more line-up changes, but the sequencer-driven, spacey, synthesizer music of Tangerine Dream has always been at the forefront, commercially and musically, of the electronic music world, and remains there to this day.
