Expanded Universe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Expanded Universe is also the title of a short story collection by Robert A. Heinlein.
It is notable because many Star Wars fans ascribe a continuity between the Star Wars movies and the Expanded Universe, with claims that George Lucas canonized all Star Wars novels as to being the true sequels or prequels to the normal Star Wars movies.
Many elements created in the Star Wars Expanded Universe have made it into the films, such as the planet Coruscant.

Origins: CERN: Ideas: The Big Bang
According to most astrophysicists, all the matter found in the universe today -- including the matter in people, plants, animals, the earth, stars, and galaxies -- was created at the very first moment of time, thought to be about 13 billion years ago.
Popping open a beer bottle results in a roughly similar cooling, expanding effect: gas, once confined in the bottle, spreads into the air, and the temperature of the beer drops.
Among this evidence is the observation that the universe is expanding.

 Universe
The Universe is what we can see from Earth - sometimes called the observable Universe.
It is because the Cosmos inflated that the Universe seems flat.
But as the tiny region which would eventually become the Universe was expanded, this curvature was almost entirely flattened out, in the same way as the curvature of the surface of a soccer ball would be flattened out if you blew it up to the size of the Earth.

Exploratorium: Hubble: Where is the center of the Universe?
The top layer represents the universe today, expanded 5% from its size a billion years ago.
The top layer (the universe today) was made by enlarging the bottom layer (the universe 1 billion years ago) by 5% percent.
The real universe is the same: in a billion years all of the spaces between galaxy clusters has expanded by about 5 percent.

Articles - Star Trek Expanded Universe   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
The Star Trek Expanded Universe is a generic term to describe an extrapolation of events which occur in the Star Trek Universe outside the scope of the television series and feature films.
As the "Expanded Universe" conjectures are not canonical, the producers of Star Trek are not bound by them; thus, in a two-part episode of Star Trek: Enterprise aired in 2005 ("Affliction" and "Divergence"), a somewhat different explanation for the change in Klingon physical appearance was given.
Elements of the Expanded Universe conjecture (genetic engineering using human DNA) were retained, however it was revealed that the change was the result of a virus that resulted from these experiments, rather than from any voluntary choice on the part of the Klingons.

Energy Citations Database (ECD) - Energy and Energy-Related Bibliographic Citations
We consider a cosmological setting for which the currently expanding era is preceded by a contracting phase; that is, we assume the Universe experienced at least one bounce.
We show that scalar hydrodynamic perturbations lead to a singular behavior of the Bardeen potential and/or its derivatives (i.e., the curvature) for whatever universe model for which the last bounce epoch can be smoothly and causally joined to the radiation dominated era.
Such a universe would be filled with nonlinear perturbations long before nucleosynthesis, and would thus be incompatible with observations.

Astronomers calculate that the universe originated about 13 billion years ago in an explosion of space called the big bang.
At that time, all the matter and energy in our observable universe was packed together in a volume smaller than an atom.
As the universe expanded and cooled, small particles condensed and formed the elements hydrogen and helium.

Guide to the Star Wars Expanded Universe Timeline
The Expanded Universe, or EU, is the moniker for the entire body of work that comprises the stories set in the Star Wars universe ranging from novels, comics, cartoons, short stories, young adult books, television shows, animated features and more...
Continuity has been and remains important to Lucas and Lucasfilm as it is the harmony that exists between these various and often disparate sources which strive to tell multiple but cohesive stories of the heroes, villains and fringe characters under the one unified umbrella that is the Star Wars Saga.
Those who reject the Expanded Universe on the grounds of their personal inability to allow for continuity errors (as well as subsequent clarifications) fail in their reasoning to see that the films themselves are subject to rather interesting incongruities, particularly between the original versions of the Classic Trilogy and the later Special Editions.

For over a quarter century, as the Star Wars trilogy captured the imagination of a generation and smashed records across the globe, questions inspired by those four throw-away lines burned in the minds of the saga's fans, questions whose speculated answers grew more fanciful by the day.
Then I fell in love with the Expanded Universe when it started out, with material from Marvel and West End Games, cartoons and films about Droids and Ewoks, and stories by Brian Daley and L. Neil Smith.

For those readers of Heinlein who have limited themselves to his Future History stories, his Lazarus Long saga, or perhaps his early Juveniles, Expanded Universe presents an interesting alternate view of Heinlein's writing including many stories not featured in other anthologies and a number of his nonfiction pieces as well.
His survivalist pieces may seem dated or extremist today, yet for the cold war climate (and today's constant threat of terrorism), the message is still clear: those who are ready will survive catastrophes, and those who aren't may very well not.
Give this Heinlein anthology a chance; for those already versed in Heinlein's other works, Expanded Universe will offer a fresh look into the mind of one of science fiction's Grand Masters.

Several times in Destiny's Way, the latest book of The New Jedi Order, characters proclaim that it is indeed the turning point of the bloody war between the Yuuzhan Vong and the New Republic.

These are the burdens of writing in a shared universe, ones that Williams takes in stride, having chalked up his share of experience in other multi-author series.
