United States Navy - 1997 Posture Statement
A distinct advantage of naval expeditionary forces is their ability to act as sovereign extensions of our nation, free of the political encumbrances that might inhibit or limit the employment of ground and land-based air forces.
Their expeditionary character becomes more pronounced when nations are reluctant to offer visible support or grant access, either for fear of reprisal or because the warning is ambiguous.
Forward-deployed naval forces, expeditionary and adaptive in nature, are the preeminent force for deterrence and conflict prevention, and they are able to bring sustained, decisive force to bear when required.

Expeditionary operations entail light, mobile, on-scene forces—projecting power from the sea and able to engage and disengage quickly at a time and place of our choosing.
Expeditionary warfare, however, entails the employment of light, flexible, and maneuverable forces for such missions as presence, engagement, and disengagement—all at the will of the National Command Authority [NCA], the leadership of this country.
Expeditionary forces can occupy territory if that should be necessary, but with the globalization of democracy I maintain that occupation is not only not desirable in most countries around the world, it is unwelcome.

We propose that an appropriate description of an expeditionary force is: "An agile and flexible force organized to accomplish a broad range of military objectives in a foreign country or region.
Expeditionary forces must possess the capability to rapidly increase or decrease the combat power available in an area of operations, commensurate with political or military considerations.
Expeditionary forces must be able to overcome and penetrate these by identifying and exploiting seams in hostile defenses or, if necessary, by overwhelming them with superior firepower and maneuver.

"Forward...From The Sea": Intelligence Support to Naval Expeditionary Forces
`Expeditionary' implies a mindset, a culture, and a commitment to forces that are designed to operate forward and to respond swiftly.
Expeditionary means operating in the littoral or `near land' areas of the world which are frequently characterized by confined and congested water and air space occupied by friendlies, adversaries, and neutrals, which makes identification extremely difficult."
The unpredictable nature of future challenges to naval expeditionary forces demands that naval intelligence sensors and collection methods, afloat and ashore intelligence centers, and dissemination systems are highly capable and provide timely and accurate sensor-to-shooter connectivity.

 Expeditionary Air Warriors
Force protection requirements unexpectedly skyrocketed after 9/11, and the Air Force had to enlist the help of nearly 9,000 Army National Guardsmen to help protect USAF installations.
The Air Force also hopes that new technologies can be used to assist with security missions such as perimeter defense, which would reduce the demand for security forces in future years.
But the two expeditionary wings had been chipping in all across the AEF calendar, so aligning them with the rotating forces was viewed as the equitable and inevitable solution.

Land Forces   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Heavy forces -- armored and mechanized units -- are trained and equipped for mobile warfare and for operations against armies employing modern tanks and armored fighting vehicles.
Light forces -- airborne, air assault, and light infantry units -- are tailored for forcible-entry operations and for operations on restricted terrain, such as mountains, jungles, and urban areas.
The primary tasks of these early-deploying forces would be to mount an initial defense in conjunction with naval and aviation forces, and secure ports and airfields for the arrival of follow-on forces.

ISN Security Watch - UK reshapes armed forces for expeditionary warfare
It may be an effective force multiplier once on the battlefield, but the high cost of such advanced systems is a force reducer in the ministry: Each unit may be able to do more, but each nation can afford less of them.
The basic deployable force structure will be made up of two heavy armored brigades, three medium brigades, and a new light brigade, as well as the existing air assault brigade and the Royal Marine Commando brigade (strictly speaking a naval formation).
Therefore, a deployable force of 64 strike aircraft and 16 air defense aircraft is thought to be adequate for any expeditionary force, be it small, medium, or large.

The character of the EMTF resides in AMC's commitment to enrich its expeditionary culture and war-fighting focus) In October 2003, the command stood down its two numbered air forces and transferred non-war-fighting functions (organizing, training, and equipping) to the headquarters staff.
Each task force uses a variety of expeditionary teams from the CRW that surge from the United States within 12 hours of notification to deliver and sustain joint forces as well as employ theater air-mobility forces.
Nevertheless, force presentation of the EMTF according to combatant commands helps mitigate the low density of the specialized component, thus allowing focused application where the war fighter needs this expertise the most.

Mechanized Tube Artillery as an Integral Element of Expeditionary Forces
According to them such forces should preferably be employed in a manner that makes the best use of their true talents to dynamically affect the correlation of forces.
This suggests that armored forces, be it in deeply-penetrating breakthrough operations, in bypassing marches of long reach or in concentrated counterattacks against the flanks of an invader, excels other force elements in their ability to change the course of events.
Advocates of prominent employment of tube artillery in expeditionary forces are not convinced by these arguments for the advantages of rocket artillery with respect to mobility, range of fire and accuracy.

I'm personally wary of using the term "light" infantry since to many this invokes a certain limited mindset:- that if a unit is "light" it shouldn't have certain bits of equipment, or at least not in high levels.

Learning Lessons in the American Expeditionary Forces - Wikisource
While the general nature of that earlier conflict was well known to the U.S. Army’s leaders prior to the deployment of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) to Europe in 1917, many of the specifics involved with raising a force that could fight effectively in the harsh trench warfare environment of that period were not.
This successful transformation came about largely because the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) had consciously set out to learn all it could from the experiences of its allies and enemies and to analyze and profit from its own successes and failures.
It seemed obvious to them that the most efficient way to use the fresh troops from across the Atlantic would be to train them with Allied instructors and put them into the trenches with British and French units that could shepherd them through their encounters with the Germans.
