He was one of the forerunners of cognitive psychology.

Experimental psychology Encyclopedia of Psychology - Find Articles
Experimental psychology flourished in the second half of the nineteenth century with the work of such figures as G. Fechner (1801-1887), whose Elements of Psychology (1860) is considered the first study in the field, and Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1920), who established the first psychological laboratory in 1879.
Thus, the concept of experimentation can no longer be limited to the laboratory, and "experimental psychology" is now defined by method and by the kinds of processes being investigated, rather than its setting.
Although ideally the experimental and control groups will be as similar as possible, in practice, most psychological research is complicated by a variety of factors.

The VSC laboratory is dedicated to the study of the role of organisational factors in the encoding and retention of spatial information as acquired mainly through the visual modality.
As we subscribe to the notion that the understanding of adult human cognition can be better achieved by observing how its components are fractioned during cognitive growth and how they are partitioned in less complex cognitive systems, we integrate traditional methods of experimental psychology with comparative, developmental, neuropsychological and modelling perspectives.
The laboratory is equipped with fixed and portable testing stations for testing serial-spatial cognitive skills in small scale environments and with experimental set-ups enabling the collection of data regarding spatial memory, search and foraging in larger scale environments.
