beepSNORT: Experimental Rock as Contemporary Music - Just Another Crossover Gambit?
Art rock ensembles can certainly be considered an attempt to not just create a popular avant garde, but to act childish in the face of this current contemporary music gerontocracy.
I will admit to a fondness for early Branca guitar orchestra work, however, but that seems to defy the definition of experimental rock as it was the misuse of gigantic numbers of electric guitars that made his early work so compelling.
Sure, the instruments used in a rock ensemble are potentially useful; _all_ the materials of rock are fair game, and there are indeed rock bands whose playing is so tight that their discipline may be advantageously emulated.

One of the most straightforward rock records in their catalog, it boasted a guest appearance from one-time Velvet Underground drummer Moe Tucker, who sometimes used Half Japanese as a touring band, and frequently welcomed Jad Fair as a guest on her own records.
Though largely overlooked during their relatively brief lifespan, Slint grew to become one of the most influential and far-reaching bands to emerge from the American underground rock community of the 1980s; innovative and iconoclastic, the group's deft, extremist manipulations of volume, tempo, and structure cast them as clear progenitors of the...

Experimental rock-on-rock frictional wear: Application to subglacial abrasion
Rock-on-rock wear under known normal loads was measured experimentally using 62 mm diameter rotating discs machined from a range of silicic rock types: one granite, two metamorphic rocks, and three sandstones of porosities varying between 7% and 28%.
Whole grains were plucked from high-porosity rocks, without any surface polishing, so that the wear product particle size remained the same as that of the starting material.
These experimental data are consistent with wear rates inferred from silt outflow in subglacial streams, provided a tenfold stress concentration can occur relative to the ice overburden pressure.

Experimental music is any music that challenges the commonly accepted notions of what music is.
On the one hand, some experimental music is an extension of traditional music, adding unconventional instruments, modifications to instruments, noises, and other novelties to (for example) orchestral compositions.
While much discussion of experimental music centers on definitional issues and its validity as a musical form, the most frequently performed experimental music is entertaining and, at its best, can lead the listener to question core assumptions about the nature of music.

At first glance the term "avant-garde rock" may be a contradiction in terms, but upon further reflection it provides an umbrella term for trends which emerged through the cultural and political upheavals of the 1960s.
Avant Rock: Experimental Music From The Beatles To Bjork by Bill Martin (Professor of Philosophy, DePaul University, Chicago) is a fascinating, informative survey of rock music made by artists who resist the inexorable pulls compromise their work in order to commercialize it, conform it to consumer demands, and simply sell out to the highest bidder.
Taking a broad look at avant garde rock from Yoko Ono and 1970s punk to contemporary figures such as Sonic Youth, Avant Rock is a fascinating study, and a genuine tribute to rockers who consider their music, in and of itself, to be the most important part of what they do.

Post-rock was the dominant form of experimental rock during the '90s, a loose movement that drew from greatly varied influences and nearly always combined standard rock instrumentation with electronics.
In fact, post-rock was something of a reaction against rock, particularly the mainstream's co-opting of alternative rock; much post-rock was united by a sense that rock & roll had lost its capacity for real rebellion, that it would never break away from tired formulas or empty, macho posturing.
O'Rourke is also engaged in an ongoing exploration of experimental rock as a member of Gastr del Sol, who've released albums through the Teen Beat and Table of the Elements labels.

Needless to say, while the rock instigators in all of these crossovers were name artists in previous decades, today most of them thrive in the indie realm.
As writer Byron Coley explains: "Rock is not necessarily a dead horse, but neither is it something that's in and of itself a challenging endgame." Less charitably, one might note that such genre-hopping also adds status to their work.
And just as recent rock, jazz and classical musicians grew up in a world where each of the other styles was not necessarily looked upon with fear and disdain, the same will certainly happen to a greater and greater extent when our posterity hears this music being produced now.

Despite such ostensibly solid credentials, he misses a golden opportunity to fill a musicological vacuum with a reasoned survey of experimental rock, instead producing an arrogant, blatantly personal manifesto.
His scope is ridiculously narrow, neglecting the vast expanse of his chosen subject and devoting half of the text to only five arguably significant but hardly central proponents of "experimental" rock music: Jim O'Rourke, Bj rk, King Crimson, Sonic Youth ("the 'heroes' of this book"), Yes, and, oddly, nonrocker John Cage.
While Avant Rock should get some credit for reminding us that generally ignored "fringe" artists such as Merzbow and Stereolab are nonetheless vital agents in the evolution of rock music, this can be recommended to only the largest academic collections with a completist's interest in nonmainstream rock music.
