Although Australia is often said to have been discovered by Royal Navy Lt. (later Captain) James Cook in 1770, he was merely one of a number of European explorers to have sighted and landed on the continent prior to English settlement, and he did so about 170 years after the first such documented encounter.
Explorations 1501-1600 AD The first documented and undisputed European sighting (and landing) of Australia was in 1606, by the Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon aboard the Duyfken.
Explorations 1821-1837 AD The opening up of the interior to European settlement occurred gradually throughout the colonial period, and a number of these explorers are very well known.

Well before Captain James Cook charted Australia's east coast, Dutch mariners had mapped vast stretches of the Australian coastline, and the land mass was even known as New Holland.
PAUL BRUNTON: They were after gold and spices, and they found none, but it did begin the opening up of Australia, and further exploration by the Dutch on the western coast and on the south coast, and on the south coast of Tasmania.
PAUL BRUNTON: This map of Australia, which was published in the 1660s, was the state of knowledge of our part of the world, really, until Cook in 1770.

 Nineteenth Century Exploration of Australia
Although Australian coasts were charted in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and the first permanent European settlement established in New South Wales in 1788, exploration of the interior of the continent was entirely a nineteenth century phenomenon.
Prepared by the master London atlas-maker Edward Stanford, it neatly summarizes the routes taken by the period's major explorers of the Interior.
The map was so charming that I decided to make it the central feature of an Australia exploration-focussed service; to reveal its detail we have reproduced it in three overlapping panel sections that, hopefully, retain most of its original feel.

The sensational horrors of the Batavia wreck attract much attention and obscure the less sensational fact that VOC mariners engaged in deliberate and accurate exploration of Australia's northern, western and southern coasts (plus Tasmania).
The continuing popularity of the story is part of the prevailing characterisation of the Dutch exploration as bumbling and accidental, quite different from the noble work of dedicated Royal Navy officers.

Under the work program bidding system for the award of exploration permits in Australia's offshore areas, applicants are required to nominate a guaranteed minimum 'dry hole' exploration program for each of the three years of the permit term and a secondary program for the remaining three years.
Permit WA-368-P (released as W04-17) in the offshore Perth Basin has been awarded to Nexus Energy Australia N L. The company proposed a guaranteed work program of studies, acquisition of 300 km2 of new seismic data and one exploration well with an estimated cost of $9.05 million.
The secondary work program consists of one exploration well and studies with an estimated cost of $10.2 million.
