Explorer I - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Explorer I was equipped with a geiger counter for the purposes of detecting cosmic rays.
Explorer-I was placed in an orbit with a perigee of 360 kilometers (224 miles) and an apogee of 2520 kilometers (1575 miles) having a period of 114.9 minutes.
Explorer I was the first of the long-running Explorer program, which as of November 2004 has launched 83 Explorer probes.

 Explorer Information
The satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral (now Cape Kennedy) in Florida at 10:48 P.M. EST on 31 January 1958 by the Jupiter-C vehicle--a special modification of the Redstone ballistic missile--that was designed, built, and launched by the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA) under the direction of Dr. Wernher Von Braun.
Following the launch of the Soviet Sputnik I on 4 October 1957, ABMA was directed to proceed with the launching of a satellite using the Jupiter-C, which had already been flight-tested in nose-cone re-entry tests for the Jupiter intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM).
Explorer-I was placed in an orbit with a perigee of 224 miles and an apogee of 1,575 miles having a period of 114.9 minutes.

 Explorers 1 and 3
The spacecraft, named Explorer 1, was launched 31 January 1958 and was designed and built by a group of scientists from the University of Iowa, led by James Van Allen.
Unlike the orbits of the Sputniks, that of Explorer 1 was quite elliptical and it rose to an altitude of about 2500 kilometers.
Explorer 2 failed to orbit, but Explorer 3, launched March 26, was successful, and it did carry a tape recorder.

 Explorer Program
Explorers 2 and 5 are counted in the sequence even though they failed to achieve orbit.
Following the creation of NASA on October 1, 1958, the agency established the practice of no longer counting failed to orbit launches.
The early Explorers performed a large variety of scientific missions ranging from energy particle exploration through atmospheric and ionospheric studies to investigations of micrometeroids, air density, radio astronomy, geodesy, and gamma ray astronomy-including interplanetary and solar monitoring.

 Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Explorer 1 was the first satellite launched by the United States when it was sent into space on January 31, 1958.
Explorer 1 revolved around Earth in a looping orbit that took it as close as 354 kilometers (220 miles) to Earth and as far as 2,515 kilometers (1,563 miles).
Launch of Explorer 5 on August 24, 1958, failed when the rocket's booster collided with its second stage after separation, causing the firing angle of the upper stage to be incorrect.

Explorer 1 with JPL Scientists on 2 December 1957.
The Explorer (officially known as Satellite 1958 Alpha) was developed, built and launched in less than three months.
But Explorer 1 signaled the American response to the Soviet Union's initial space effort and thus, in many minds, it was the true launch of the Space Race.

 Explorer: DE 1, 2
The Dynamics Explorer (DE) mission's general objective is to investigate the strong interactive processes coupling the hot, tenuous, convecting plasmas of the magnetosphere and the cooler, denser plasmas and gases corotating in the earth's ionosphere, upper atmosphere, and plasmasphere.
Two satellites, DE 1 and DE 2, were launched together and were placed in polar coplanar orbits, permitting simultaneous measurements at high and low altitudes in the same field-line region.
The DE 2 spacecraft (low-altitude mission) complemented the high-altitude mission DE 1 and was placed into an orbit with a perigee sufficiently low to permit measurements of neutral composition, temperature, and wind.

 Explorer Spacecraft Series
This was so because even the early Explorers performed a large variety of scientific missions ranging from energy particle exploration through atmospheric and ionospheric studies to investigations of micrometeroids, air density, radio astronomy, geodesy, and gamma ray astronomy--not to mention interplanetary and solar monitoring.
The one constant amidst this diversity was that the early "Explorers" were smaller, simpler, and less costly than the orbiting observatories also used in scientific exploration of physical and astronomical phenomena.
The listing at the end of this narrative shows the satellites that clearly belong in the "Explorer" series because they were relatively small and uncomplicated, performed a scientific mission, and -- until quite recently -- appeared in satellite situation reports and post-launch reports under the name "Explorer," accompanied by a mission number.

Aaron Margosis' WebLog : RunAs with Explorer
Explorer’s command-line options are supposed to be described in KB 314853 (“Explorer.exe Command-Line Options for Windows XP”), but the documentation is actually more accurate in KB 130510, even though the latter was written for Windows 95!
The real purpose behind the setting is to make it possible to isolate Explorer windows from the desktop+taskbar, so that if a bad shell extension is loaded which crashes or hangs an Explorer window, it is less likely to affect the desktop and the taskbar.
Once you have IE and/or Explorer windows running in different security contexts, it becomes important to be able to tell them apart – particularly since in certain odd scenarios, a new window will actually run in a different security context from that which you intended.
