  The International Sun-Earth/Cometary Explorer 3
The International Sun-Earth Explorer (ISEE) program consisted of 3 satellites-- ISEE-1 and ISEE-3 were the principal US contribution to the International Magnetospheric Study, and ISEE-2 which was built and managed by ESA.
ISEE-3 was renamed ICE (International Cometary Explorer) when, after completing its original mission in 1982, it was gravitationally manuvuered to intercept the comet P/Giacobini-Zinner.
The proportional counter was 1.27 cm in diameter and was filled with a mixture of 97% Xenon and 3% carbon dioxide.

Following the launch of the Soviet Sputnik I on October 4, 1957, ABMA was directed to proceed with the launching of a satellite using the Jupiter-C, which had already been flight-tested in nose-cone re-entry tests for the Jupiter IRBM (intermediate-range ballistic missile).
Explorer 3 decayed from orbit on June 27, 1958, after 93 days of operation.
The discovery of the Van Allen radiation belt by the Explorer satellites was considered to be one of the outstanding discoveries of the International Geophysical Year.

Based on our own experimentation and feed back from Explorer owners, we have found 1 3/8 inches to be the best compromise between lowering and maintaining enough suspension travel for acceptable ride quality.
We deliver an Explorer with the full X-SPEC suspension to Edelbrock's Torrance, California facility and they analyze the shock performance, dyno the shocks and make changes to the damping curve to improve performance.

 Explorer Spacecraft Series
This was so because even the early Explorers performed a large variety of scientific missions ranging from energy particle exploration through atmospheric and ionospheric studies to investigations of micrometeroids, air density, radio astronomy, geodesy, and gamma ray astronomy--not to mention interplanetary and solar monitoring.
The one constant amidst this diversity was that the early "Explorers" were smaller, simpler, and less costly than the orbiting observatories also used in scientific exploration of physical and astronomical phenomena.
The listing at the end of this narrative shows the satellites that clearly belong in the "Explorer" series because they were relatively small and uncomplicated, performed a scientific mission, and -- until quite recently -- appeared in satellite situation reports and post-launch reports under the name "Explorer," accompanied by a mission number.

 Explorer: ISEE 3 -> ICE
The Explorer-class heliocentric spacecraft, ISEE 3 (International Sun-Earth Explorer 3), was part of the mother / daughter / heliocentric mission (ISEE 1, ISEE 2, and ISEE 3).
In 1982 ISEE 3 began the magnetotail and comet encounter phases of its mission.
A maneuver was conducted on June 10, 1982, to remove the spacecraft from the halo orbit around the L1 point and place it in a transfer orbit involving a series of passages between Earth and the L2 (magnetotail) Lagrangian libration point.
