  Multi-Warhead, Anti-Armor Missile - United States Patent 4,638,737 McIngvale 27jan87
Explosive bolts 84 have electrical leads 85 connected thereto for causing the explosive bolts to be severed and allow springs 86 to move halves 74 and 76 apart when desired to deploy subcaliber flechettes 22.
It is understood that leads 85 of explosive bolts 84 and leads 64 of explosive bolts 58 are connected to the electronics of the missile for severing the bolts to cause deployment of subcaliber missiles 22 at the appropriate time.
With the explosive bolts 84 released and nose sections 56 released, sections 50 pivot away from the missile due to high velocity windstream caught at the front of sections 50, pins 68 break, and fixture 72 moves outwardly to disperse subcaliber warheads 22.

The Space Shuttle, as I recall, is "bolted" to the launch gantry with a large handful of them, which are blown to release it from the external supports during launch.
"Explosive bolts" are very specific to each application- as noted, the "bolts" that jettison a fighter aircraft canopy can't be so powerful they throw shrapnel at the pilots.

Explosive materials are used as "bursting charges" for bombs, missile warheads, grenades, and mines; and as "propellants" to fire bullets and artillery shells.
As a propellant explosive, fl powder was used to fire balls from muskets, as well as stones from primitive cannon called "bombards", which eventually evolved into muzzle-loading artillery.
PETN is a relatively sensitive explosive, and is often used as a booster, or in "detonating cord (detcord)", a type of explosive line used as a detonator and for specialized demolition tasks.

For all their hassles, explosives are a good way of >building lightweight hardware that functions firmly and positively, >because they can put a lot of energy into it for very little weight.
Explosive bolts are not intended to explode, just to break firmly and reliably (although that invariably involves some amount of overkill).
Because the bolts are torqued to a preset tension, the two ends spring away from each other when they are sheared.

The explosive charge in turn set off an igniter, which sent a flame down the hollow core of the rocket motor to ignite the propellant.
EED’s were also used in electro-explosive actuators, where the explosive force would move a mechanical lever, and in explosive bolts where the explosive force would break the bolt allowing parts to separate.
Separation was achieved by firing explosive bolts, which released a clamp holding the third and fourth stages together.

Huygens' explosive bolts (containing the same type of charges used in ejection seats) jettisoned the heat shield, flinging Huygens ~60 meters into the Titan air, briefly entangling in the still descending main parachute, and taking it with it.
The purpose of the explosive is to blast the heat shield far away from Huygens.
As said before, the bolts detach the shield from the lander, after which it is pushed away with a spring, which was "sandwiched" between lander and heatshield by the bolts holding the two together.

A mishap during testing of such a craft, apparently involving the firing of an explosive bolt, may delay its launch to the international space station next month, according to Russian news reports.
This apparently refers to the small explosive bolts that sever mechanical and electrical connections between sections of the Soyuz during landing.
And if bolts from the same batch are also installed on the Soyuz currently docked to the space station, a significant effort will be required to requalify them or to develop contingency plans if one or more of them misfire on the planned return to Earth, now scheduled for Oct. 19 Moscow time.

Gus Grissom vs. the Media: Victim or Hero?
Although blastoff and re-entry went as expected, upon splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean, the 70 explosive bolts which held the hatch in place unexplainably exploded prematurely, forcing Gus to evacuate the capsule and swim for his life while the rescue helicopter frantically tried to save the capsule from sinking.
Although his fellow astronauts supported him in every way, and the inquiry led to the eventual conclusion that the explosive hatch blew of its own accord, Gus never recovered his stature with the public or the media.
Much to his chagrin, the exhaustive testing done on similar spacecraft with the same explosive bolts yielded no explanations for the premature explosion, as the bolts never again exploded prematurely in any testing.

The first is known explosive chemicals that are designed and produced for use as an explosive (e.g., TNT, explosive bolts, bullets, blasting caps, and fireworks).
Unlike known explosives, which are designed to be stable under normal conditions, PECs are particularly dangerous because they may explode if they are subjected to heat, light, friction, or mechanical shock.
To handle and dispose of PECs properly, the University of California, Berkeley, campus uses a specialty contractor to transport the PEC to an isolated location where the chemical is opened by remote control.
