Explosive booster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An explosive booster acts as a bridge between a low energy explosive and a low sensitivity (but typically high energy) explosive.
For example: An initiator (such as detonation cord, shock tube, or cannon fuse) does not have the energy to trigger large high explosive charges (such as PETN, TNT, or ANFO), so a booster is used to upgrade the energy so that the main charge is activated.
Explosive boosters are typically constructed by mixing high sensitivity and high energy compounds at various ratios.

It is primarily used in booster and bursting charges of small caliber ammunition, in upper charges of detonators in some land mines and shells, and as the explosive core of detonation cord, detonating at a rate of 7000ms-1....
Explosive force is released at 90 degree angles from the surface of an explosive.
Explosives are classified as low or high explosives according to their rates of decompositionDecomposition is the reduction of bodies and other formerly living organisms into simpler forms of matter; and most particularly to the fate of the body, after death.

 Initiation of Explosive Reactions
However, inmost instances the initiating charge is the lead element in what is known as an "explosive train." An explosive train uses the impulse of an initiating explosive to initiate the chain reaction that leads to the detonation of a main burster charge or ignition of a propellant.
A booster increases the shock of the initiating explosive to a degree sufficient to explode the disrupting explosive.
The devices that use initiating and booster explosives to ignite a propelling charge or detonate a projectile burster charge are called primers and detonators, respectively.

Low velocity radial deployment with predeterminded pattern - United States Patent 5,691,502 Craddock , et al. 25nov97
Where each annular explosive section is an uninterrupted ring, the different radial thicknesses of the annular explosive sections permit each of the annular explosive sections to have an amount of the low velocity explosive which is different from the amounts of the low velocity explosive in the other annular explosive sections.
The annular booster ring 66 is mounted on the front side of radial flange 32 so as to overlie each of the holes 68 and to cause the initiator pellets 70 to contact both the booster ring 66 and the annular body 22 of low velocity explosive.
The presently preferred low explosive composition is formed by mixing a liquid explosive, a powder explosive, and a liquid polymerizable material containing a foaming agent, such that the liquid explosive acts to reduce the viscosity of the resulting mixture.

PETN (Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate) is one of the strongest known high explosives.
It is primarily used in booster and bursting charges of small caliber ammunition, in upper charges of detonators in some land mines and shells, and as the explosive core of primacord.
PETN formula is C(CH It melts toward 141°C. Its preparation involves nitration of pentaerythritol with a mixture of concentrated nitric and sulfuric acid.

The term "detonation" is used to describe an explosive phenomenon whereby the decomposition is propagated by the explosive shockwave penetrating the explosive material.
A chemical explosive is a compound or mixture which, upon the application of heat or shock, decomposes or rearranges with extreme rapidity, yielding much gas and heat.

The present invention relates to a method for preparing an in situ cured ster explosive by mixing explosive crystals with a prepolymer solution comprising a carboxyl (or hydroxyl)-terminated hydrophobic polyester and epoxidized linseed oil with chromium octanoate as a catalyst.
The present invention relates to a method for preparing an in situ cured booster explosive by coating an explosive filler with a prepolymer binder that is rubbery and pliable and desensitizes the explosive by binding together the particles of explosive filler to form a tough composite explosive.
The uniform and adherant polymeric binder coating of this explosive is able to remove heat more efficiently (by endothermic dissociation and vaporization) from a decomposing particle of explosive filler than are waxes which melt and flow away from the filler surface.

Rec.pyrotechnics and alt.engr.explosives are two newsgroups that discuss explosives, much to the consternation of some subscribers to the former.
Explosives are usually classified into: Low Explosives or Propellants eg colloidal cellulose nitrate (smokeless powder), fl powders, gun and rocket propellants.
ANFO explosives are usually initiated by a high-explosive booster such as formulation B. Maximum sensitivity to initiation occurs around 2-4% fuel oil, with the presence of water decreasing sensitivity.
