Exploding into Space: Explosive Ordnance for Space Systems
Explosive ordnance in the space systems industry is defined as any component or assembly on a spacecraft or launch vehicle that contains or is operated by explosive materials.
The space industry continues to enhance its understanding of the physics of explosive ordnance applications, and new approaches continually replace older designs; nevertheless, the primary cause of failures continues to be a lack of knowledge of performance characteristics and inappropriate corrective actions based on misunderstandings about the physics underlying the operation of these devices.

EXPLOSIVE FORCES OF IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICES
Explosives are substances that, through chemical reaction, rapidly and violently change to gas, accompanied by high temperatures, extreme shock and a loud noise.
Explosives are classified as low or high according to the detonating velocity or speed at which this change takes place and other pertinent characteristics such as their shattering effect.
When an explosive is detonated, the block or stick of chemical explosive material is instantaneously converted from a solid into a rapidly expanding mass of gasses.

Improvised explosive device - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An improvised explosive device (IED) is the formal name for explosive devices, often used in unconventional warfare or asymmetrical warfare by guerrillas or commando forces in a theater of operations.
However, some groups have been known to produce sophisticated devices that are constructed with components scavenged from conventional munitions and standard consumer electronics components, such as mobile phones or garage door openers.
Mostly the IED's used homemade explosives (HME), although the use of Semtex H smuggled in from Libya in the 1980's was also common in smaller devices.
