Vancouver SkyTrain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The two lines follow a common route between Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver and Columbia Station in New Westminster, serving the cities of Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster en route.
During the Expo and afterwards it was extended, first to Columbia Station, then across the Fraser River to Scott Road once the Skybridge was finished, then the final mid-1990's extension to King George Station in Central Surrey.
The Millennium Line follows the Expo Line from Waterfront Station to Columbia Station in New Westminster, then continues along its own route to Vancouver Community College (VCC-Clark Station) in Vancouver (the extension of the Millennium Line from Commercial Drive Station to VCC-Clark Station was opened on January 6, 2006).

The Expo Line (coloured blue on route maps) opened in late 1985 and the Millennium Line (yellow) in 2002.
In 1989, the line was extended to Columbia Station, then in 1990 to Scott Road in Surrey, crossing the Fraser River via the purpose-built, cable-stayed "SkyBridge." Finally, in 1994, the line was extended to its current terminus at King George Station.
The Expo Line travels underground from Waterfront to Stadium Stations, mainly through a tunnel previously used by the Canadian Pacific Railway to connect its mainline tracks along Burrard Inlet to its former yard on False Creek.

Four ideas to reduce the cost of the RAV line
A line depressed half-way in the ground would enable riders to see something pleasant out the windows, instead of concrete tunnel walls, but would not be unsightly or intrude on local residents’ privacy.
Third, it is argued that according to technical studies, the Dunsmuir Tunnel section of the Expo line cannot accommodate the additional traffic of the RAV line.
Thus, the RAV line could be built within the budget that is currently committed by the funding partners, and it could be built as a conventional public sector project, rather than as a public-private partnership.

The Expo Line will (if built as planned) follow an old street-car right of way, and will connect USC to downtown before running westward to a temporary terminus in Culver City.
And the Expo line, which is being sold as a line to serve the Westside, will do little to alleviate traffic on the overburdened I-10 corridor.
It seems to me that perhaps this line was (appropriately, at the time) conceived as an alternative to a Red Line extension, during the dark days when the subway was the whipping boy of everybody from Rep. Henry Waxman to County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

Subway project deemed unlikely - THE DAILY BRUIN ONLINE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Although the Expo Line would help alleviate some of the West side's traffic congestion, experts agree an extension of the Red Line would carry more benefits, since the route would follow Wilshire, the backbone of the most highly populated and commercially dense section of the city.
Though construction of the Expo Line, which may begin early next year, will cost less than a Red Line extension, Taylor questions whether the MTA will receive a return on its investment, since the Expo Line's service area is not as congested with people and traffic as Wilshire.
The Expo Line is not a suitable substitute for a Red Line extension, since it will be traveling above ground, said Genevieve Giuliano, director of the Metrans Transportation Center, a joint research center of USC and Cal State Long Beach.

I will be pushing for an “Expo Expo” in or near Santa Monica for local business and political and citizen groups to discuss and come to some concensus on expediting a full Expo Line by 2009.
Of interest is that there appeared to be an overwhelming concensus of pursuing a light rail of some sort connecting the future Expo Line along Lincoln Blvd. (perhaps elevated to avoid street widening and reducing traffic lanes) down to LAX and the Green Line as the ultimate long-term solution for Lincoln Blvd.’s traffic woes.
