		More importantly, the National Highway Authority of India, and even various state governments, has been investing billions of rupees in building new expressways and highways (including the ambitious Golden Quadrilateral project), eating into the freight business of the railways.
		THE announcement last week by Indian Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav to launch a dedicated Rs600 billion freight corridor could not have come at a more appropriate time.
		The Mumbai-Delhi container freight corridor is expected to cost about Rs65 billion, and will divert a substantial chunk of freight traffic to the railways.

	SC nod for Delhi expressway
		While the Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation would construct the western peripheral expressway, the National Highway Authority of India NHAI would construct the eastern peripheral expressway.
		The order came after the Union Cabinet secretary, in consultation with the chief secretaries of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, submitted a report on the western and eastern peripheral expressways.
		The expressway, to be constructed in five-an-a-half-years, would ease traffic and prevent heavy trucks from using Delhi as the transit route for their journey to other states.
