Congregational Singing of Hymns of Praise   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
The minister is instructed to study the scriptures, but he is not commanded to read a five or ten minute sermon, but rather to preach in demonstration of the spirit and of power, to expound on the word of God, for the comfort and edification of the people of God.
Instead, the preaching of the apostles and ministers of the apostolic day was done in the presence of entire families and households, the same message to all alike.
No preacher should complain about the noise of babies or young children, but should preach to be heard to the entire congregation, and the family unit should be encouraged by all that is done in the church.

EXTEMPORANEOUS PREACING by Henry Ware, 1831
This is precisely the manner of the extemporaneous speaker -- in whom the countenance reflects the emotions of the soul, and the tone of voice is tuned to the feelings of the heart, rising and falling with the subject, as in conversation, without the regular and harmonious modulation of the practiced reader.
To preach without premeditation, is altogether unjustifiable; although there is no doubt that a man of habitual readiness of mind, may express himself to great advantage on a subject with which he is familiar, after very little meditation.
Many have preached in this mode for years, and yet have never relaxed their diligence in study, nor declined in the variety, vigor, and interest of their discourses; sometimes dull, undoubtedly; but this may be said with equal truth of the most faithful and laborious writers.

LECTURE XII HOW TO PREACH THE GOSPEL
By preaching truth in proper proportions, I do not mean mingling all things together in the same sermon, in such a way that sinners will not see their connection or consistency.
It was often said to me then, in answer to my views of extempore preaching, that ministers who preached extemporaneously would not instruct the Churches, that there would be a great deal of sameness in their preaching, and they would soon become insipid and repetitious for want of thought.
He said it was the first preaching he had ever heard, that he understood, and the minister was the first he had heard who spoke as if he believed his own doctrine, or meant what he said.

The preaching of the gospel is the God ordained means of instructing His people both old and young.
Because it is the Holy Spirit who directs the preaching, we are confident that He is able to apply His word to the hearts of all who hear it.

 REMARKS UPON MINISTERIAL EDUCATION
But the longer I preached, the less reason had I to think that my error lay in the direction in which it was supposed to lie, by my brother ministers.
They will preach to them about other people, and the sins of other people, instead of addressing them and saying, "You are guilty of these sins; and, The Lord requires this of you." They often preach about the Gospel instead of preaching the Gospel.
For I believe that all ministers, called by Christ to preach the Gospel, ought to be, and may be, in such a sense inspired, as to preach the Gospel with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven.

Well, this minister, in his preaching, strongly insisted on the opposite points, the doctrine of election, Divine sovereignty, predestination, etc. The consequence was, as might have been expected where this was done with ability, there was a powerful revival.
And when he was asked, how he could think of preaching the doctrine of election so much to that people, when it was the very thing that lulled them to a deeper slumber, he replied.
He said it was the first preaching he ever heard, that he understood, and the first minister he ever heard that spoke as if he believed his own doctrine, or meant what he said.

Thus, what I preached always had a Biblical basis as sound as my understanding of the Scriptures informed by my research both of the text and secondary authorities.
Preaching is always the first line of defense, the first step in discipleship, and the first step in reaching the individual.
A preaching consultant should periodically be contracted to visit a church on a Sunday and provide the minister with an evaluation of his sermon.

The Gospel should be preached in those proportions, that the whole Gospel may be brought before the minds of the people, and produce its proper influence.
If a minister means to preach the Gospel with effect, he must be sure not to be monotonous.
It is objected that this preaching is theatrical.

Undergraduate Student Projects-- Chaison: Introduction to the Charles Grandison Finney Letter
Evangelical preachers of the Presbyterian New School, such as Finney, espoused human agency in salvation and Finney preached that human beings are responsible for their own sinfulness as each person is a free moral agent able to choose good or evil.
Finney's letter also reveals part of his preaching style as he writes to Dr. Kirk that extemporaneous preaching will be followed by the masses but "reading sermons won't collect the people".
He preached with enormous power and magnetism and often directly to the people on the seats of the "anxious bench".

An Autobiography by Charles G. Finney (page 1 of 4)
The preaching was by an aged clergyman, an excellent man, and greatly beloved and venerated by his people; but he read his sermons in a manner that left no impression whatever on my mind.
His preaching was of the old school type; that is, it was thoroughly Calvinistic; and whenever he came out with the doctrines, which he seldom did, he would preach what has been called hyper-Calvinism.
I think that their practical views of preaching the Gospel, whatever their theological views may be, are very defective indeed; and that their want of unction, and of the power of the Holy Ghost, is a radical defect in their preparation for the ministry.

The decision to preach a sermon without notes should be made before the sermon is prepared, not after.
A secondary message is that preaching without notes will be difficult at first, but will be easier as time goes on and new skills are aquired.
Webb attempts to prove that preaching without notes is more valuable in general because it allows a greater connection to the audience and it frees the preacher to be passionate.

Preaching is one of our most valuable opportunities to enhance the wholeness of the congregation.
Such a postmodern theology of preaching and worship calls not only for pastors to be spiritual guides of their own souls, but also of those on the entire worship team (Liesch).
My own pastoral experience in preaching a series of church health sermons and testing for their impact demonstrated their impact as a wake up call for the congregation.

 New Georgia Encyclopedia: Primitive Baptists
The Primitive Baptists later underwent a number of further divisions over such issues as the manner of addressing the unconverted in sermons, whether preaching the gospel was a "means" of regenerating the elected, limited versus absolute predestination, the validity of outsider baptism, divorce, membership in secret societies, and the use of instrumental music in worship.
Other tenets include strict church discipline; a bivocational, unsalaried ministry; rhythmic, chanted, extemporaneous preaching; stark meetinghouses; feet washing; and a slow, a capella style of congregational singing, usually from words-only hymnals.
The singing style in such churches bears a close relationship to the shape-note singing tradition, exemplified in the various editions of the Sacred Harp.

2007 International Congress on Preaching > Schedule
One of the challenges that Bible expositors face is that of distinguishing between truths that were cultural to the people in Bible times and those that are true for every age.
In fact, these strategies have enabled the seminar leader to maintain an intensive preaching schedule while leading a large pastoral team, serving as a part-time Seminary professor and also being heavily involved as a community leader.
This workshop is designed to present a rationale and implementation for Christological preaching which motivates the preacher to embrace the text of scrtipture, communicating its truths with such ardor and accuracy that the exuberant hearers exultin the exaltation of Christ while they are being ushered into the presence of God for the purpose of transformation.

King's sermons reflected his religious fervor
What gets lost in the din of his historical achievements is that within King beat the heart of a Baptist preacher, said Mervyn A. Warren, a professor of religion at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Ala.

He remembered that the figure in the pulpit -- in the dark suit and white shirt -- was humble.

BROADUS ON SERMON DELIVERY: STILL GOOD AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
Broadus’ most extensive discussion was reserved for the third method of delivery:  what he called “extemporaneous preaching.”  By this, he meant preaching either from notes or without notes; and his view was that if one could preach with notes, one could, with minimal effort, preach without them.
As to delivery itself, it is only in extemporaneous speaking, of one variety or another, that [the sermon] can ever be perfectly natural and achieve the highest effect.
And while painstaking culture vainly strives to read or recite precisely like speaking, the extemporaneous speaker may, with comparative ease, rise to the best delivery of which he [or she] is capable.

"The Pastor" by Bp. Bedell - XIX.
Alas, how few ministers preach with all their might, and speak about everlasting joys and torments in such a manner as to make men believe that they are in good earnest!
A very strong argument in favor of extemporaneous discourse is, that it is the popular form of all other addresses to the people.
The comparative value of written and extemporaneous discourse is thus shown, as being addressed, the one to the understanding, and the other to the heart.

 What I Traded
For those of you unfamiliar with the FWBs, they are a sub-denomination of the Southern Baptists that shuns the notion of preparing sermons in advance, under the belief that "God will provide the message at the right time." Every trip to a FWB church is an adventure in extemporaneous preaching...
For example, it was not uncommon for the pastor to preach before Sunday School rather than after it, nor was it uncommon for a service to simply consist of people singing various hymns, or people getting anointed with oil or gathering together to pray over or about someone.
Some pastors also preached against the usage of substitute swear words, "since the meaning and intent behind the words is still clear." That means you can't even say "crap," "heck," "darn," or "frig."

It is wrong, however, to argue against the practice itself, from their example; for all other modes would be equally condemned, if judged by the ill success of indolent and unfaithful men.
It should be first of all remarked, that the force of the objections commonly made, lies against the exclusive use of extemporaneous preaching, and not against its partial and occasional use.
