IBM PC compatible - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This was due to the 20-bit memory addressing space of the 8088.
A PC programmer could benefit from Windows 95's memory management capabilities and extended functionality, and have API access to the graphics and sound cards - of which there were many versions and drivers.
The processor speed and memory are many orders of magnitude greater than they were on the original IBM PC, yet any well-behaved program for the original IBM PC that does not call the hardware directly can still run on a modern PC.

In order to fit potentially much more memory than the 384 KiB of free address space would allow, a banking scheme was devised, where only selected portions of the additional memory would be accessible at the same time.
This insertion of a memory window into the peripheral address space could originally be accomplished only through specific expansion boards, plugged into the ISA expansion bus of the computer.
Both machines used real mode memory architecture, which only allowed programs to use 1 megabyte of address space, of which only up to 640 KiB was reserved for use.

Specific versions of ENS are available for Novell NetWare, SCO Unix, and HP-UX so that servers running those operating systems can interoperate and share management in a network with VINES servers.
Memory beyond 1MB on computers using the Intel 80286 and later processors, not configured for expanded memory.
Later processors can access more memory, but it was the 80386 with its ability to address 4GB of memory that really made extended memory usable.

This is a generic term which applies equally to Conventional Memory, Expansion Memory, Extended Memory, Expanded Memory and (perhaps) CMOS Memory.
Part of this self-test is the determination of the amount of physical memory in the machine.
Some PC memory expansion cards contain hardware support for EMS 4.0, as well as the memory chips themselves, and thus this memory is absolutely Expanded Memory.
