Extended display identification data - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
EDID structure 1.0 was defined in 1994; version 1.1 followed in 1996, then 1.2, and 1.3 in 2000.
The combination of EDID and I²C is called the display data channel version 2, or DDC2.
The EDID is often stored in the monitor in a memory device called a serial PROM (programmable read-only memory) or EEPROM (electrically erasable PROM) that is compatible with the I²C bus.

Display Data Channel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Display Data Channel or DDC is a digital connection between a computer display and a graphics adapter that allows the display to communicate its specifications to the adapter.
The DDC link is carried on three pins – data, clock and ground – in a 15-pin VGA connector, a DVI connector or an HDMI connector.
The data in the monitor's ROM is held in a standard format called EDID (for Extended Display Information Data).

Matrox Graphics - Display resolution guide
Display resolution – alternatively referred to as "display area", "screen area", "screen resolution", and "monitor resolution" – is an important consideration when choosing a monitor or graphics hardware.
Extra displays are appropriate when information is easily divided (for example, when viewing different windows), but increasing the resolution of a display is more appropriate when large amounts of information need to be kept together (for example, when map viewing).
At lower resolutions, display scaling may occur and, as a result, the screen image may appear blurry because the selected display resolution is resized (and filtered) to fit on the screen.

When the display is driven at its native resolution, all it has to do is read each number and apply that brightness to the appropriate pixel.
In this way, each pixel in the output buffer of the source device corresponds directly to one pixel in the display device, whereas with an analog signal the appearance of each pixel may be affected by its adjacent pixels as well as by electrical noise and other forms of analog distortion.
The data format used by DVI is based on the PanelLink serial format devised by the semiconductor manufacturer Silicon Image Inc. This uses Transition Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS).

Asynchronous: A method of serial communication where data is sent when it is ready without being referenced to a timing clock, rather than waiting until the receiver signals that it is ready to receive.
Buffer: A storage area for data that is used to compensate for the speed difference when transferring data from one device to another.
Interlacing: a display method on a raster scan monitor that scans each even number scan line of the screen in one sweep of the screen, and the odd-numbered scan lines on the next sweep.

 FAQs - Fusion 900 Display
The workstation where you want to display your application must be specified by either the -display command line option or by setting the DISPLAY variable in your shell environment.
If your display devices are the standard VGA type displays, using the HD15 connector, you will need to use the supplied adapters.
This feature is achieved by the display adapter communicating with the display device using the VESA Display Data Channel (DDC) and the Extended Display Identification Data (EDID).

EDID lets other devices ask the display about what resolutions and scan rates it supports and also its native, or preferred, resolution.
By contrast, with a DVI display, the device generating the HD signal knows beforehand what resolutions the display supports so it should be considerably harder to select an invalid video-output resolution.
If the display is able to pass these tests, then you can feel relatively confident that the display's HDCP functionality is robust and therefore it is safe to purchase.

 EDID - Webopedia.com
Extended Display Identification Data is a VESA standard data format that contains basic information about a monitor and its capabilities, including vendor information, maximum image size, color characteristics, factory pre-set timings, frequency range limits, and character strings for the monitor name and serial number.
The information is stored in the display and is used to communicate with the system through a Display Data Channel (DDC), which sites between the monitor and the PC graphics adapter.
The latest version of EDID (version 1.3) can be used in CRT displays, LCD displays, and future display types because EDID offers general descriptions of almost all display parameters.

Windows Plug-and-Play is able to use the Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) generated by the monitor’s controlling circuitry to set the graphics adapter card’s settings so that a visible image is displayed without any user intervention.
And the fact that Display Tune is both customizable and extensible through plug-ins puts the monitor manufacturers in control of what features they want to offer their customers, and how these features will appear on the screen.
Display Tune hides all the complexity of MCCS and the DDC/CI behind a simple Windows application that is easy to use.

The user can then disconnect the display, place it in a remote location and reconnect it, without rebooting the operating system.

Plasma display technology is a new "emmissive" flat panel display technology which gives you the rich, accurate color fidelity of conventional Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors in a large display that is thin enough to hang on the wall.
Overall, LCD is great for displays 28-inches and smaller, and plasma is ideal where 32-inches or larger display is needed.
Another interesting feature, that is not used by current displays or cards, is the ability for the card to only send new data to the monitor when the individual pixels to be displayed change state.

DDC/CI An international industrial standard by the name of Display Data Channel/Command Interface (DDC/CI) was developed by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) to expand upon an existing DDC standard.
All data are transmitted in both directions via the video graphics card and the standard VGA or DVI signal cable.
