Technique - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A technique is a way of efficiently accomplishing a task in a manner that is not immediately obvious or straightforward.
In fine art, a technique refers to the style and tools used to create a particular effect with, for example, oil paints, where the technique used by the artist can be the result of his training, fashions or personal styles or any combination of these.

Extended techniques, as may be inferred, require the performer to use an instrument in a manner outside of traditionally established norms.
Plucking the string of a violin is not an extended technique, but tapping the body is. Playing a string instrument with a mute is not an extended technique, but attaching tinfoil to the bridge is. In the 18th century, the crescendo itself, called a Mannheimer, was considered an extended technique for the orchestra.
In the 1960s, Berberian was renowned for her facility with extended techniques and her performances of works by Berio, Cage, Ligeti, etc. defined a genre of experimental vocal music.

Painting Technique -- Recommendations and Resources
Alexander Technique is an educational discipline practiced to prevent the physical decline caused by habituated mannerisms.
The cut-up technique is a literary form or method in which a text is cut up at random and rearranged to create a new text.
A variation of the cutback technique is the substitution method, in which measurements are made on a full length of fiber, and then on a short length of fiber having the same characteristics (core size, numerical aperture), with the results from the short length being subtracted to give the results for the full length.

 * Dusted Features [ Scrapes and Hisses: Extended Techniques in Improvised Music ] *
Extended techniques may be defined here as instrumental techniques that are unusual relative to the time period in which they were used.
In addition, though extended techniques on acoustic instruments may be the focus of this article, it would be wrong to view these players’ music in terms of a strict dichotomy between musicians who play traditional instruments and those who play electronics.
They use so-called “extended techniques” in such a way that the sounds they use are no longer extended in the sense of their being extensions of ordinary technique, but rather form the basis of a vocabulary of sounds unto themselves.

Gene targeting technique extended to human embryonic stem cells
By bringing to bear the technique, known in scientific parlance as homologous recombination, on DNA in human embryonic stem cells, it is now possible to manipulate any part of the human genome to study gene function and mimic human disease in the laboratory dish.
"Indeed, homologous recombination is one of the essential techniques necessary for human ES cells to fulfill their promise as a basic research tool and has important implications for ES cell-based transplantation and gene therapies," write Wisconsin researchers Thomas P. Zwaka and James A, Thomson, the authors of the new study.
The technique has long been used in the mouse and is best known in recent years for its use to generate mice whose genomes have been modified by eliminating one or more genes.

 Dr Bryan C. Mendelson
The extended SMAS technique has been the subject of increasing international interest and was performed by Dr. Mendelson as a live procedure to the Canadian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Conference in October 1999.
The Extended SMAS technique is important because for the first time it enables plastic surgeons to correct the laxity of the ageing face at the cause, which is beneath the skin.
Because the Extended SMAS facelift works beneath the skin, bringing the muscles back to their former position, natural contour and defintion is subtly restored to the face.

This treatise traces the development of extended techniques for the piano through a study of selected piano works by American composers of the twentieth century, and examines the technical and interpretive challenges of playing these works.
First, the author shows the advent of these techniques through an examination of piano works composed before 1960 and how extended techniques are related to the conceptual changes of music.
This treatise reveals that the evolution of extended techniques is closely associated with the development of twentieth-century music, reflecting changing musical values throughout the century.

 Frozen-Plug Technique for Liquid-Oxygen Plumbing
A frozen-plug technique has been conceived as a means of temporarily blocking the flow of liquid oxygen or its vapor through a tube or pipe.
The technique makes it possible to perform maintenance, repair, or other work on downstream parts of the cryogenic system in which the oxygen is used, without having to empty an upstream liquid-oxygen reservoir and, hence, without wasting the stored liquid oxygen and without subjecting the reservoir to the stresses of thermal cycling.
In a typical application of the older technique, the affected section of pipe is cooled by use of carbon dioxide or liquid nitrogen, causing the water in the affected section of pipe to freeze.

Extended Definitions in the New Edition
The extended definitions in BDAG are not always so specific; in fact, at times they are quite broad and do not match the specificity of the glosses.
An extended definition in BDAG may mark out the general area of meaning, while the glosses that are offered indicate the more specific sense within the general area.
The extended definition “lack of agreement respecting policy” is less specific than the glosses “strife, discord, disunion.” The glosses indicate that the disagreement is serious and that it is accompanying with emotional tension.

HHMI News: New Technique Explores the 'Black Holes' of Chromosomes
A new technique developed by Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers significantly reduces the time required to isolate genetic material from the so-called “fl holes” of chromosomes—the centromeric regions where one chromosome is joined to its sister in the cell.
To speed that process, Preuss and her colleagues developed an isolation technique that exploits the fact that centromeric DNA is distinguished by a high number of methyl groups, which attach to the cytosine base pairs contained in DNA.
The success of the technique with the other species demonstrates that rapid analysis of the centromeric regions in a broad range of plants, and even mammals, is feasible.

It’s difficult to conceptualize the idea of an extended technique for the human voice.
"Extended technique" implies an aesthetic of formalization and mastery, a kind of basic vernacular that the extended technique ignores.
With physical instruments, this is simple; they all have distinctive techniques, so that playing a guitar with drumsticks between the strings, using a double-bass as a percussion instrument, and blowing so hard through a saxophone that the pitch bends and distorts are all easy to imagine as being beyond the norm.

Abstract A137: Investigation of Nonlinear System Identification Techniques
First, the identification technique is extended to address distributed-parameter multi-degree-of-freedom systems with general damping-restoring types of nonlinearities subject to random excitation.
Analytical expressions as functions of the modes are derived and numerical simulations of a marine riser are used to explore the adequacy of the methodology and the benefits of using modal analysis in the system identification procedure.
The second adaptation of the system identification technique is devised to illustrate the technique’s inherent ability to identify the potential frequency dependence of certain parameters.

The second time I taught the course, I used an object-oriented teaching technique by covering records (which are like objects) early, and encouraging students to closely couple the definition and operations of a record type.

This particular technique was conceived and demonstrated by Dunstan Orchard, of 1976 design fame (hats off to you, Dunstan).
Logic dictates that the same technique should yield similar results when working with a paragraph, which can be treated as another block element.
While developing this technique, we found that when working with a block element other than an image, in bold defiance of common sense, Explorer decided to clip the left and top parts of the block — the ones that “jump” out of the shadow — regardless of what we tried.

A Brief Review of Photometric Redshifts
By plotting the average SED of the Virgo galaxies and the average SED of the Cl0925 galaxies on the same graph using a logarithmic wavelength scale, he was able to measure the displacement between the two energy distributions, and hence the redshift of the second cluster.
His redshift value of z=0.19 agreed closely with the known spectroscopic value of z=0.192, so he extended his technique to a handful of clusters of then unknown redshifts out to maximum redshift of z=0.46.
In the ultra-violet dropout techniques, an exact redshift of a galaxy is not determined.
