 Encyclopedia: Space Shuttle external tank
This tank was used for the majority of the Shuttle flights, and was last used on the ill-fated STS-107 flight.
The liquid hydrogen tank is 331 inches (8.4 m) in diameter, 1,160 inches (29.46 m) long, and has a volume of 53,518 ft³ (1,515.5 m³) and a dry weight of 29,000 pounds (13 t).
The contractor for the external tank is Lockheed Martin (previously Martin Marietta), New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Only Throwaway Component on the Space Shuttle: The External Fuel Tank
The external fuel tank is the only piece of hardware that is not reused and burns up in the atmosphere and falls into the ocean after it is jettisoned from the orbiter.
According to Damon (1995), “The external tank (ET) serves two purposes: it carries the propellants for the orbiter’s three main rocket engines and it is the support structure that connects the orbiter and solid rocket boosters (SRBs) together during ascent to orbit” (p.
The liquid hydrogen tank was pressurized with gaseous nitrogen and subjected to conditions simulating the thrust of the orbiter's main engines and solid rocket boosters.

NASA Approves New Design For Shuttle External Tank Fitting (July 27, 2004) -- NASA is moving ahead with plans to redesign a part of the Space Shuttle external fuel tank that investigators believe played a critical role in the Space Shuttle Columbia...
In two separate pressurized sections inside, the external tank holds 535,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants for the Shuttle's three Main Engines -- enough to fill more than 16 20-by-40-foot backyard swimming pools.
The tank has gone through major changes since it was designed in the early 1980s.

 space shuttle
Developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), it consists of a winged orbiter, two solid-rocket boosters, and an external tank.
After about 8 min of flight, the orbiter's main engines shut down; the external tank is then jettisoned and burns up as it reenters the atmosphere.
It is believed that damage to the left wing, which could have been caused by insulation that separated from the external fuel tank during launch, ultimately permitted superheated gas to flow into the wing, weaken it, and cause its failure.

 STS External Tank Station
Space station based on Shuttle external tank fitted out with surplus Skylab hardware from the National Air and Space Museum, concept of 1977.
NASA studied several concepts in the 1980's using the 'wet workshop' approach to the capacious External Tank carried into orbit with every shuttle flight.
Despite the incredible logic of this, NASA management never pursued it seriously - seeing it as an irresistable low-cost alternative to their own large modular space station plans.
