The problem’s gone – at least the two cases of My Computer and MMC which were the only sure-fire ways I knew to induce the error.
The drivers are MS and they knew it wasn't 'their' problem but took the trouble to help out because their product (in this case, their USB2.0/IEEE 1394 External Hard Drive) is sold and supported for XP as well as Mac and other Windows systems.
In XP, SP2 and all latest updates with external hard drive (USB or IEEE 1394) there are, at least, two scenarios where the external drive generates a sticky windows explorer (explorer.exe) error in shell32.dll.
