The Odinic Rite - Odinism for the Modern World - Irminsul and the Externsteine
Thus, this sacred pillar overhung the big sanctuary of the Externsteine, which stands very close to the city of Horn (the name is important because of the shape of the IRMINSUL - which has what appear to be horns).
The Externsteine stands as the beacon of the heathen world, the most holy stead, certainly, of the Northern Tradition yesterday and today, but also one of the most important religious and cultural centres of the archaic Europa.
Generally, we ignore that, close to the Externsteine (4 km far from the stead), there is another holy stead seemingly dedicated to the moon, Oesterholz (see the name of the old spring goddess, Ostara/Eostre).

From the very earliest of times the Externsteine ('steine' is German for 'stones') were a cultplace, a place of worship: by the Celts, by the Germanic peoples, by the Romans.
The Christians saw the Externsteine as a replica of the holy places at Jerusalem during the time of the crusades, with the upper sanctuary as the chapel of Calvary.
Perhaps at the Externsteine the Goddess was worshipped in the upper sanctuary as Bird/ air/sky and in the groundfloor large cave as Dragon/serpent of the underworld chtonic powers of the magnetic waters.

At the geomantic center of this ancient sacred region stand the Externsteine rocks, a chain of towering sandstone spires dating from the Cretacious period (about 70 million years ago).
The round window-like opening shown in the photograph has been demonstrated to have significant celestial alignments, including a view of the moon at its northern extreme and the sun at sunrise on the summer solstice.
Similar to numerous other sacred sites in Europe today, Externsteine is much frequented by crowds of noisy tourists; if one is intent on experiencing the magic and holiness of this extraordinary place, the author recommends a surreptitious nocturnal visit.

 Externsteine, Germany
An undeniably mysterious and magical place, Externsteine is thought to have been a pagan cultic center until Charlemagne abolished Saxon paganism in 782 AD, and it was used by Christian hermits throughout the Middle Ages.
Externsteine is a natural outcropping of five limestone pillars, the tallest of which is 37.5m high.
A number of beautifully carved reliefs were left by the medieval hermits at Externsteine, the most notable of which is a spectacular 12th-century wall relief of the Descent from the Cross (also called the Tree of Life).

 AHNENERBE SS
Archaeological excavations were conducted in Germany at Paderborn, Detmold, Haithabu, and at Externsteine.
Haithabu, which is still recognized by archaeologists as an important site for medieval Norse artifacts, is in an area of northern Germany near the Danish border, and is very close to Detmold and Externsteine, the site of a much-reputed Aryan temple and which some legends connected with Yggdrasil, the "World-Ash" of Norse mythology.
Externsteine is also close to Paderborn and Wewelsburg, and the entire sites compromised for the Ahnenerbe a mythological heartland where the Saxons resisted the Romans and their heirs, the Franks of Charlemagne.

 Externsteine
In Detmold she not only came across the material recovered at the Externsteine in the 1930s, which had never been scientifically published, but she also learned that the local Staatsarchiv contained correspondence and other records generated by numerous archaeological enthusiasts of the area.
She therefore undertook a double project--to detail the results of the neglected digs, and to consider the interaction of politics and science in the study of prehistory under the Third Reich.
That is, there is no evidence that the Externsteine were ever a Germanic temple.[7] This disappointing result may well account for the failure of Julius Andree, who directed the 1934 excavations, to document his work fully or indeed to produce a proper publication.

 AWCH Externsteine
Located close to Detmold off the highway connecting Hannover to Dortmund, in the area known as the Teutoburger Wald, the Externsteine is recognised as a place of natural power and a sacred site since ancient times.
It was a major ceremonial centre for German pagan worship till Charlemagne, King of the Franks and Holy Roman Emperor, made a concerted effort to suppress paganism and forbade worship there.
This kind of thing is quite common among ancient sites and curiously, the non-man-made Externsteine lies on virtually the same latitude as Stonehenge.

After visiting the "Externsteine", campers enjoyed a picnic lunch on a nearby meadow, followed by more games with the parachute.
After lunch the second stop was the "Hermannsdenkmal", which was completed in 1875 and commemorates the victory of Germanic chieftain Arminius ["Hermann"] over three Roman legions in a battle fought in the Teutoberg forest in 9 A.D. Hermann's victory ended Rome's attempts to extend its dominion eastward in Germany beyond the Rhine River.
