Topic: Extra bases hits

  Baseball Glossary at Baseball Tips.com
For 1996, the established hit level would be found by adding 1993 hits, two times 1994 hits, and three times 1995 hits, and dividing by six.
By this method, if your "need hits" and your "projected remaining hits" are the same, your chance of reaching the goal is 50 percent.
Therefore, zone rating should not be interpreted simply as the percentage of balls hit into a player's zone that the fielder was able to turn into outs (if that were the proper definition, it obviously would be impossible for a player to post a zone rating anywhere close to 1.000).

Bill James - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Judging a player's qualifications for the Hall of Fame based on his career's similarity to other HOFers.
Extra bases on hits is calculated with the formula (Doubles)+(Triplesx2)+(Homerunsx3).
James was a strong critic of the Dowd Report, which was the most thorough investigation (commissioned by baseball commissioner Bart Giamatti) on the gambling activities of Pete Rose.

Chuck Klein - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He became an instant success as the starting right fielder and left-handed hitting slugger for the lowly Phillies team.
Unlike most sluggers, Klein was a competent baserunner, topping the senior circuit in 1932 in stolen bases and had 15 triples, good for third in the league.
The same year he converted in the last player to lead in homers and steals in the same season, when he paced the National League with 38 and 20.

The chance is based on hit location, the power of the hitter, the size of the stadium, the speed of the runner, the base he'd be tagging up to, and the manager's tendency for aggressive baserunning.
Retirement is based on a player's "value" (an internal weighted calculation of current and potential ratings) and age.
The choice for key players is based on a player's value - which is compiled by their current ratings, future potential, age, and other intangible factors, and is a big factor in a player's salary.

He hit 54 home runs, smashing his year-old record, batted.376, and led the league in runs (158), RBI's (137), walks (148), and his slugging average of 847 was a major league record for over 80 years (Barry Bonds eclipsed it with a.860 mark in 2001).
His batting, on-base and slugging averages all fell dramatically (to a still-impressive.315/.434/.672), but for the first time since he became a full-time outfielder, he failed to win the home run title, hitting 35, two fewer than Tilly Walker of the Philadelphia Athletics.
Later, in 1943, in another charity game at Yankee Stadium, he pinch hit, drew a walk, but tore cartilage in his knee when running the bases, and this would be the last time he would play in a formal game.

Hardwood Maple Baseball Bats For Great Hitting
You can be sure that the greatest hitters in the game, from Ty Cobb to Ted Williams and Pete Rose in the modern era, have grown into their game prowess by swinging high quality hardwood maple baseball bats.
However unlike aluminum bats which can ‘deaden’ gradually over time, the ‘good news’ is that your maple baseball bat typically breaks only when it loses the key inner structure and hardness.
At far lower cost, a great Sam Bat brand or Akadema maple baseball bat allow a hitter to own and experiment with different grip and barrel sizes, in the ongoing effort to improve and perfect his or her swing.

Another record I'd consider unapproachable is the 623 bases that Ruth accumulated in 1921 (that is: times-on-base + extra bases on hits + stolen bases).
That year, Ruth was on base 353 times, which is the 3rd most ever, and had 253 extra bases on hits and 17 stolen bases.
His 457 total bases on hits that season is still the record.

OPS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
If a player gets as many walks as hits (which almost never happens) and his total of extra bases from hits equals his total of hits (not much more likely than Rich Garces winning the Boston marathon), then OPS would be weighted 50% BA, 25% BB, and 25% power.
Because hits are more common than walks and singles are more common than extra base hits, OPS is typically 70-80% batting average.
While a lineup has an effect on a player’s ability to get hits, walks, runs, and runs batted in, a leadoff hitter on one team would probably be a leadoff hitter on another team and a cleanup hitter on one team would hit in the heart of the order on another team.

The Baseball Analysts: Extra Base Hits
It's a well-known fact that runners get a head start when there is a full count on the batter and the difference between runners attempting the extra base with a full count and without is remarkably consistent from year to year.
Assume that Ortiz hit a single or a double in with Johnny Damon on first ten times and Damon took the extra base seven of those times.
Once those numbers are adjusted for the park, the count, and the number of outs, we can total the number of extra bases we would have expected each batter to advance the baserunners based on the ATTr of the runners when that batter was not up.

In addition to hitting 54 home runs, smashing his year-old record, he hit.376 (4th in the league), drove in 137 runs and scored 150 (both best in the league) and his 150 walks contributed to him getting on base in more than half his plate appearances.

Beyond the Box Score :: All Stories
Since a stolen base when the game is close and/or late is more important than a SB in other situations, it raises the issue of whether or not some players can "pick their spots" and do more of their stealing when it really matters.
The same is probably true for pitchers since the number of runs they allow is very well predicted by the OBP (on-base percentage) and SLG (slugging percentage) they allow (see "Do Pitchers Give Up their Expected Number of Runs Based on OPS?").
If the answer were yes, it means that a.010 increase in OBP (on-base percentage) on a team that hits 240 HRs in a season would add just as many runs to a team that hits only 100 HRs (assuming everything else being equal).

 SABRmetrics - Secondary Average
Secondary Average, or SEC, is a sabermetric tool used to gauge a player’s ability to produce extra bases independent of batting average (The total of a player's extra bases on hits, walks, and stolen bases expressed as a percentage of at bats).
The success or failure of a SB attempt obviously influences the bases gained total of the batter, thereby directly impacting his value to the team in relation to its ability to score runs, so it should be counted.
Ditto a player’s ability to draw BB and reach base for his teammates to knock him in.

Obviously infield singles advance baserunners one base and outfield hits advance runners the extra base some percentage of the time.
IIRC, what I found when I did this kind of analysis is that while power hitters hit the ball further and the outfielders generally play a little deeper against them, they also hit the ball harder, thus giving the baserunners less time to take the extra base.
All in all, it tends to be a wash. The correlation in Click's study may be solely due to the infield singles.
