Extra-vehicular activity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Extra-vehicular activity (EVA) is work done by an astronaut away from the Earth and outside of his or her spacecraft.
The first EVA by a non-Soviet, non-American astronaut was made on 1988 December 9 by Jean-Loup Chrétien of France during a three-week stay on the Mir space station.
The first EVA to perform an in-flight repair of the Space Shuttle was by American astronaut Steve Robinson on August 3, 2005, during "return to flight" mission STS-114.

 Extra-vehicular Activity - Wikipedia

SPACE ADVENTURES: The Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) at Star City, Russia
Cosmonauts usually practice their extravehicular activity (EVA) on a mock-up of the station in which they are supposed to fly.
Weightlessness effect on the technological activity of a cosmonaut, on qualitative and quantitative results of his (her) work first of all is manifested in a form of unsupported state, thus affecting the implementation of different labor-requiring operations, what in its turn is resulted from the laws of mechanics.
EVA means the crew (cosmonauts) actions outside the pressure-tight compartments of the manned space vehicle or inside the depressurized compartments.

Excerpts from Walking to Olympus: an EVA Chronology
The EVA to augment the power-starved station's solar arrays was originally to have been performed by cosmonauts Vladimir Titov and Gennadi Strekalov, but they were unable to dock their Soyuz T-8 spacecraft with Salyut 7.
EVA was a primary objective of Project Gemini; EVA requirements helped dictate that Gemini be a two-person spacecraft, and early plans had EVAs on every flight save the first.
This permitted the EVA astronaut to operate the cutter from 9 m (30 ft) away - the distance from the edge of area around Skylab's airlock hatch (the EVA Bay) to the strap holding shut array wing 1.

The Extravehicular Activity Radiation Monitoring (EVARM) will be the first to measure radiation dosage encountered by the eyes, internal organs and skin during specific spacewalks, and relate it to the type of activity, location and other factors.
Space travel can be dangerous for humans because of the large amounts of radiation - particularly Extra Vehicular Activity, or EVA, when an astronaut is spacewalking outside the shielded walls of his or her spacecraft and protected only by a spacesuit.

We propose to evaluate the effect of Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) on the lung by studying those crewmembers who perform EVA before and after single and repeated EVAs.
Because EVA poses a significant risk of decompression sickness including bubble events within the pulmonary circulation, non-invasive tests of pulmonary function that are altered by changes in the pulmonary vasculature present an ideal way to follow a subject over the course of multiple EVAs.
Following EVA, the same session will be repeated by those crewmembers who performed EVA, preferably on the same day that EVA was completed or, if necessary because of crew scheduling, on the day immediately following.
