He said the main character in Extras, a failed actor played by Gervais, was unlike Brent in that he was intentionally funny and likeable, despite having chip on his shoulder.
Extras is unlikely to have such a small audience, however, given the huge success of The Office on DVD and the importance the BBC director general, Mark Thompson, has placed on producing original, popular comedy.

Moving away from the "fly-on-the-wall" style, and into the plot-based format of sitcom, (albeit, still minus the laughter track) it is already a brave move, in as much that the writing requires a more rigid discipline, with rules to conform to - or break, whichever the case may be.

One thing is for sure - the TV critics love Ricky Gervais' latest sitcom which he has packed to the rafters with guest stars; almost every magazine and newspaper in town heaped praise on it during its 2005 and 2006 runs.
We on the other-hand were not quite so sure about it; a view that it would appear quite a large chunk of the viewing public shared (although "Extras" did manage to pull in 4m viewers on average, double the normal number for Thursday evenings on BBC2).
The series was ok but Ricky seems to be relying too much on obtaining comedy from ruthlessly ripping it out of the Hollywood elite rather than using the subtle humour which made "The Office" such a classic.
