Extreme (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Extreme was formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1985.
Vocalist Gary Cherone was in a band with drummer Paul Geary, whilst guitarist Nuno Bettencourt was in a band with bassist Pat Badger.
Extreme was one of the many bands to receive diminished attention from music fans and the recording industry when musical tastes changed in a rush following the release of Nevermind by Nirvana.

 Extreme | Biography | MTV
Although guitarist and band mastermind Nuno Bettencourt's style was derived from Eddie Van Halen, his heart is with the progressive hard rock of Queen, as well as Beatlesque pop and touches of lounge jazz.
Consequently, Extreme's music is never easy to classify; it's not just heavy metal, hard rock, or pop -- their albums cover all of that territory with a sweeping ambition and a social consciousness to match.
Extreme's third album, Extreme III: Three Sides to Every Story, was an over-ambitious follow-up that sold well at first but didn't have the staying power of their previous album.

It's not uncommon for a band to spend years playing clubs, build up a following, and then release the best of their material on the first album, and then enter the infamous "sophomore slump." For Extreme, however, this was not the case.
Extreme was actually a highly underrated band that encompassed elements of Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Van Halen.
Extreme has always had the ability to write and compose songs that seem simple, even shallow on the surface, but that have much deeper meanings, and are themed much more seriously upon closer examination.

 EXTREME
Extreme for a few years were the most happening band, who can forget those gigs particulary when the band launched into gems like 'Get The Funk Out' of which the crowds always took over chanting 'Get The Fuck Off!!' instead.
Unfortunately Extreme like so many other bands, got labelled as a ballad band, people overlooked the fact that Extreme then consiting of Gary Cherone (vocals), Nuno Bettencourt (guitar), Patrick Badger (bass) and Paul Geary (drums) were very powerful musicians, particularly Cherone whose charismatic voice could perform anything that was thrown at him.
These four guys from the Boston area were indeed one of the best hard rocking, bands to emerge from the eighties since Van Halen and Aerosmith who were a major influence on the band, ironic then that Cherone ended up replacing Sammy Hagar in Van Halen going to record the underrated but excellent '3' album.

Still, Bettencourt has one Extreme connection in his life: his manager is former Extreme drummer Paul Geary, who's also Godsmack's manager -- and as such, arguably the most successful Extreme alumnus.
Growing away from his old band's mainstream rock, Bettencourt went to an edgier kind of songwriting and a more tune-oriented, less guitar-heavy approach while holding onto the best of Extreme's funk and prog-rock leanings.
The band, a power trio with his bass-playing nephew Donovan Bettencourt (who at 25 is only nine years Nuno's junior) and New Yorker Jeff Consi on drums, have already released two albums in Japan.

Extreme: Waiting for the Punchline marks the fourth studio release for this Boston-based band, and, sadly to say, in addition to losing their original drummer, they've also lost some of that hard edge and power that drew droves of budding guitarists to their fold during the late '80s/early '90s.
Extreme still hasn't lost its touch for writing good songs with extremely catchy hooks - exa ctly what radio and TV want.
