One of the more extreme forms of metal, death metal is basically an offshoot of thrash, with less melodic riffs and a low, growly, often almost unintelligible vocal style that at its best (or worst, depending on one's point of view) has been described as "cookie monster vocals".
The early nineties saw the initial rise of death metal in places such as Florida (Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Obituary, and others) and Sweden (At The Gates, Entombed, and others), and remains a dominant form of extreme metal to this day.
Black Sabbath are, of course, the fathers of metal in general, but their early work concentrated on slow riffing and thus is the primary influence on doom metal bands.

Gothic metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gothic metal is a genre of heavy metal music that originated during the early 1990s in Europe as an outgrowth of doom-death, a subgenre of doom metal.
Gothic metal is sometimes considered a loose genre in the way it sounds because the genre is defined by its composition of the music and its aesthetics, leaving individual bands to provide their own interpretations.
Gothic metal tends to take influence from the doom metal, fl metal, and death metal subgenres of Heavy metal for its composition, heavily synthesizing the styles of their melody and rhythm ideas in its guitar work, causing the music to be aggressive and fast paced.

Symphonic metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Symphonic metal is both a genre of metal and a name given to several subgenres of other metal genres, and as such, both forms of usage have slightly varying definitions.
Orchestral metal as a genre (sometimes called opera metal or plainly symphonic metal) is generally the same in the way it sounds between bands, because the genre is pretty typical of itself and the features it uses and easily depicts between itself and other genres.
Claims that keyboards, female vocals and other gothic metal characteristics are inconsistent with the essence of "true" fl metal has often resulted in confusion between symphonic fl metal and gothic metal bands.

Perkara death metal biasanya melibatkan tema yang lebih nihilistik berbanding genre yang lain dan menggunakan metafora yang mengerikan atau "jahat" untuk menggambarkan konsep yang lebih besar.
Death metal is clearly an outgrowth of heavy metal, but the full story is complex and interesting, and is the subject of some debate among fans and musicians.
To their credit, early "death metal" bands such as Death did push the format forward, something that would ultimately pay off in a new form of music that was substantially different from their closest forefather, thrash metal.

 The Gothic Milieu (Introvigne)
Although the term Gothic was created by outsiders, it was quickly accepted by the movement, notwithstanding the fact that the latter largely ignored 18th and 19th century Gothic literature (with the possible exception of Dracula, whose inclusion in the Gothic genre is however disputed by contemporary critics).
Gothic concentrates on human reactions to particular emotions associated with death, corpses, blood, the macabre, and vampires.
Black metal is both musically and culturally less sophisticated than Gothic, but fans may switch from one to another and still remain part of the same Gothic subcultural milieu.

Transcending the Mundane: Interview with Ensoph
We all have in common the passion for the 90’s extreme metal scene, that is our main root: we all have started playing doom and death metal at the beginning of 90’s, and this remains a great influence, even between all the elements that have enriched our sound in the years.
I think that the music we play can be actually described as extreme avantgarde electro gothic metal: something like the melting point between electro-industrial, extreme metal and the esoteric field, all re-read by our personal sensibility, so intolerant to every kind of artistic limitation and musical standardization.
We think that our 90’s gothic extreme metal roots are the most important of the elements that compose our music, even if electronics and industrial is becoming always more essential in our sound.

The documentary is not likely to convert outsiders to fl metal, because during its 52 minutes- save the 30 seconds of Mayhem live episodes- it does not show fl metal from any attractive angle (even though the genre had an undeniably thought-provoking element that much of current mainstream lacks).
Vampiria play good atmospheric metal where many styles and moods are presented (while eclecticism is quite natural in metal music these days, it's harder to find a release where you can find one stable style as opposed to one with contrasting moods).
The music is very dark, even by the lauded standards of extreme metal, and focuses more on the brutality and alienation of everyday life than the bleak atmosphere of ancient ruin or folklore.

This is a refined 9 song journey to the different ends of the metal spectrum: a combination of a fl metal vocal and death grunts, orchestral keyboards as well delicate piano parts, melodic death, doom metal as well as bay old school thrash riffs.
This album will be liked by both fans of gothic rock and metal, not truly belonging to any of these styles, but managing to combine the elements of gothic metal, gothic rock, and electronic sounds.

 Tristania: Atmospheric Gothic Metal
Gothic metal doesn’t always translate convincingly in a live setting, and it’s often not the most visually stunning display.
His vocals are extremely potent and performed with an overwhelming array of emotions, offset by the equally impressive talents of session clean vocalist Osten Bergoy and female vocalist Vibeke Stene, whose delicate yet convincing voice is usually accompanied by an ocean of choirs to create a theatrical element to these vast compositions.
The dominant sound here is Gothic/Symphonic Metal bringing to mind early Theatre Of Tragedy with slight hints of symphonic flened metal, but instead of writing their own versions of those bands songs, Tristania take their influences and create something truly unique.

These signings were far removed from the Extreme Metal scene Earache was known for and synonymous with, but during this period Welsh act Dub War scored the label 5 UK singles chart hits and for a couple of years were Earache's most succesful act in the UK.
The global explosion of interest in metal and extreme metal in particular, led to the publication of the book 'Choosing Death' in 2004, in which noted scenester Albert Mudrian admirably detailed the history of the death metal and grindcore scenes, and rightly placed Earache's key role as the central catalyst within it.

"Memorial" is extreme gothic metal, guitar-driven with predominantly harsh vocals and a moderate amount of background keyboards.
But "Memorial" is not especially symphonic, neither catchy nor memorable, and nowhere near the level of technicality or brutality of far too many death metal bands to mention.
A rhythmically technical orchestra melded with Meshuggah-esque metal and gothic keyboards, "Proliferation" is almost entirely unlike any metal I have heard, let alone anything I was expecting nine tracks into "Memorial." And from there, Moonspell somehow manage to end things stronger than they began.
