"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer - Salon
"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" is the story of Oskar Schell, an eccentric 9-year-old, the kind of child that adults adore and kids love to pick on.
Ultimately, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" is a story of that choice, thrust upon the characters by inconsolable grief.
The catch of the title is that it is tragedy that is loud and close, but the people who can share and relieve grief are all too quiet and far away.

Extremely loud and incredibly close - Reviews - Books - Entertainment
The trick - the most fundamental trick in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - is to play off his voice, a voice that progressively crystallises the smart-arse slacker voice to the point where its callowness becomes the voice of childhood at its most poignant with that of the father leaving his last messages.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close portends itself as an epoch-making book even though it achieves its effects as a series of very delicately executed cartoons that, by virtue of their comprehensiveness and their vari-egation, do take on a kind of epical quality.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a richly articulated symphony of a book, full of wonderfully inventive passages and demonstrating in both its flawless dialogue and its looping zany shape the hand of some kind of literary master.

ELIC is ambitious, it is clever, it is flawed.

There are moments when Foer comes close to brilliance -- to a startling emotional acuity, but too many times he's undone by cleverness, by the need to perform.
Despite the dramatically contemporary subject of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Foer hasn't invented something new as much as shifted the plot of his spectacularly successful Everything Is Illuminated.
For all its flaws, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a serious, clever, funny work, which should be read and remembered.

"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" buckles under the weight of its own clichés, and the ingenuity of the mind that brought us the acclaimed "Everything Is Illuminated" can do nothing to save it.
Unlike "The Little Prince," however, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" is grounded in present-day New York, completely devoid of any fantastic or magical elements and, at least in theory, aimed at grownup readers.
The last few pages of "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" are devoted to photographs of a man plummeting from the World Trade Center, taken at different moments during his fall.

War is loud and close--for Oskar's grandparents, who survived the firebombing of Dresden, and for Oskar, who lost his father in the World Trade Center attacks.

 explore faith : Bookshelf :
Knowing that Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a book about the emotional aftermath of September 11, my first assumption about Jonathan Safran-Foer’s second novel was that its title described the shocking events of that day, in words not unlike those spoken to me by friends and family who were there.
So while each of the characters finds his or her own way to cope, what eventually matters is not the nature of the paths they chose—healthy or harmful, spiritual or scientific—but the fact that they chose a path at all.
Along the way, the details they encountered—a voice that is extremely loud, a face that is incredibly close—could be arbitrary, wonderful.

BookPage Interview April 2005: Jonathan Safran Foer
The stinging arrow of literary envy will have to arc extremely high and incredibly long to bring to earth the soaring flight of Foer's very sad and very funny story of nine-year-old Oskar Schell and his grief for his father, a victim of the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center.
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close brings a reader to that high level of seriousness that only the very best comedy can achieve.
Still, the singular thrill of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is, quite frankly, the utterly engaging and utterly vulnerable character of Oskar Schell.

And it's an appealing world, notwithstanding the war—or terrorism—derived gravitas with which the authors imbue their tales: a cozy milieu of Manhattan Jewish intellectuals, of unostentatious comfort, of kind and cooperative strangers, of family members who are always nice to one another and whose dysfunctions are poetic, never crass or petty.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close centers upon a fictional creation either adorable or insufferable, depending on your point of view: nine-year-old Oskar Schell.
The echo of this storyline in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is that Oskar's grandfather, Thomas Schell, leaves the United States to go back to Dresden when—in fact, because—his wife becomes pregnant.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Closeby Jonathan Safran FoerI have been mulling over my response to the book for a long while.
The characters I had the greatest difficulty with were the grandparents, and I would have been inclined to have dismissed them as fancies of Oskar, were it not for the fact that they told their own stories independently, corroborating each other.
I don't think that they signal the demise of the book as we know it, nor do I think they are an indicator of all that ails society or the youth of today etc. The furore over e.e.

However if, as some reviewers have suggested, 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' is a disappointing follow-up (which I suspect is highly doubtful), then his debut novel must have been an example of impossibly perfect fiction.
'Extremely Loud' also follows a similar style to the previous book, with passages and chapters skipping between different narrators and times, providing multiple voices and viewpoints that add depth to the main characters' experiences.
Well paced, tighly written and inventive, 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' deserves to be read and remembered.

Or so I had thought: Whether or not Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a "significant" novel in the deepest sense is what we're here to argue, but I think we can say it is the first substantial attempt to figure out what it might mean to write a novel about 9/11.
