  Exultet
It remains to notice three accessories of the "Exultet": the ceremonial carried on during its performance; the music to which it has been sung; and the so called "Exultet-rolls" on which it was sometimes written.
The deacon is vested in a white dalmatic, the rest of the sacred ministers are vested in purple.
These "Exultet Rolls" were decorated with illuminations and with the portraits of contemporary reigning sovereigns, whose names were mentioned in the course of the "Praeconium".

The Exultet (or Exsultet) is the traditional Roman Catholic hymn of praise intoned by the deacon during the Easter Vigil.
In the absence of a deacon, it may be intoned by the priest, or by the cantor.

 AS EASTER DRAWS NEAR
The Exultet is the long and beautiful poetic text proclaimed by the deacon, priest or cantor during the Easter vigil as a type of lucernarium or hymn of praise to God for the light of the Paschal Candle.
The ancient chant melody is at the same time lyrical and solemn: transporting the listeners beyond the mundane cares of everyday living, tugging at the heart, and inviting all present to a deeper kind of prayer.
This refers not only to the praise of the Exultet, but also to the sacrifice of Christ himself, since in patristic writings, the evening sacrifice of Vespers is frequently associated with the evening sacrifice of Christ on the Cross.

To the melodies adapted to the Lament ationes and the Exultet, as sung in the Church of Rome during Holy Week, it is absolutely impossible to assign any date at all.
The melody of Exultet is, indeed, very frequently cited as the finest example of plain song in existence.
To assert that melodies so old as these have been handed down to us in their original purity would be absurd.

 The Roll
Another specialised roll was the exultet roll of southern Italy, of which only a limited number of examples survive.
Illustrations of the text were set upside down and slightly offset from the relevant passage, so that the image could be seen by the congregation as the roll hung over the back of the lectern.
The use of the roll rather than the codex for recordkeeping purposes seems to be a particularly English characteristic, and no explanations for it are particularly convincing.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Paschal Candle
A long Eucharistic prayer, the "Præconium paschali" or "Exultet", is chanted by him, and in the course of this chanting the candle is first ornamented with five grains of incense and then lighted with the newly blessed fire.
At a later stage in the service, during the blessing of the font, the same candle is plunged three times into the water with the words: Descendat in hanc plenitudinem fontis virtus Spiritus Sancti" (May the power of the Holy Spirit come down into the fulness of this fountain).
Clearly this reference to a carmen cerei (poem of the candle) must presuppose the existence, in 384, of the candle itself which was to be blessed by the deacon with such a form, and the saint's reply makes it probable that the practice was neither of recent introduction nor peculiar to the church of Placentia.

The paradox of the felix culpa from the Exultet alone is enough to deny Duns Scotus’ position that the Incarnation had to happen since, as Aquinas argued, using the felix culpa as illustration, a higher state can result after sin.
The eleventh to the thirteenth century a number of Exultet rolls were prepared in Southern Italy with large illustrations (about 45 x 20 cm.) up-side-down to the text so that as the deacon read the text from the ambo the roll could hang over the other way for the congregation to see.
One obvious factor in the decline of the concept of the felix culpa is the Reformation and the desuetude of the Exultet in Protestant churches.

Such plays were performed in the context of liturgy, often at the conclusion of a celebration of the Divine Office and before Mass, using various areas and furnishings of the church as the setting.
This recording takes this context in account by preceding the drama with a performance of the Exultet (the ancient chant associated with the lighting of the Easter Candle during the celebration of the Easter Vigil), and following it with sections of the Mass for Easter Day.
Except for the Exultet (which would have been normally chanted by a Deacon), and the lines of Jesus in the play, the entire recording consists of excellently blended female voices.
