It is situated on rising ground, on both sides of the Pregel, 42 m.
from its mouth in the Frische Haff, 397 M. of Berlin, on the railway to Eydtkuhnen and at the junction of lines to Pillau, Tilsit and Kranz.
It consists of three parts, which were formerly independent administrative units, the Altstadt (old town), to the west, Lobenicht to the east, and the island Kneiphof, together with numerous suburbs, all embraced in a circuit of 91 miles.

The German border town of Eydtkuhnen was small, but had four to five story buildings, wide paved streets and nice shops, according to the standards of those times.
Eydtkuhnen had already instituted "White Weeks" and "Seasonal Sales," and the inhabitants of Kibart as well as their friends and relatives from other towns enjoyed these occasions.
Until the beginning of the Nazi regime in 1933, Kibart Jews bought most of their supplies in Eydtkuhnen, including types of fruit which could not be obtained in Kibart, such as bananas, grapes, water melons, melons etc., and for reasonable prices.

It became known, that when the lawyer Jehoshua Lurie was detained and transferred to Eydtkuhnen, his wife with their little blond daughter came to the commander of the S.S. and asked him to release her father.
The execution of this murder was to be an example for the Gestapo man from Eydtkuhnen, Tietz, who was in charge there and who was nominated to execute such murders in the future.
The Lithuanian police too was informed about the date of the "operation." Their part was to detain the men, to assemble them and to act as guards, conveyors and executors.

The first stop on the German side was Eydtkuhnen.
There is an account by Alexander Harkavy about his voyage in 1882 from Vilna to New York, contained in Allon Schoener, The American Jewish Album, 1654 to the Present, New York: Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., 102-103 (1983).
Harkavy stated he took a train to a small city on the Russian side of the border, was smuggled by wagon and foot across the border, walked to Eydtkuhnen, and then resumed his trip to Hamburg (by train).

I used it with great success during my visit to Washington looking for my mothers relatives WASBUTZKY, BRAUDE,living in Germany at this time.
I was amazed to find out that many relatives I expected to find in East Prussia (Tilsit,Koenigsberg, Breslau, Eydtkuhnen etc) have already moved to Berlin and other places in Germany proper.
In addition to the address in 1939 it also gives the maiden names of married women and the "extent" of Jewishness.

It had taken me from September 1918 to late spring or early summer 1921 to achieve this.
In August of the same year it was planned for me to meet my parents, who would take the train in Riga and travel over Latvia to Germany: I would join them in Kovno (Kaunas), Lithuania, and accompany them to the German frontier in Virbalis or Eydtkuhnen.
