Eyepatch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An eyepatch is a small patch, usually of fl cloth, that is worn in front of one eye and usually attached around the head by an elastic band or by a string.
It is often worn by people to cover a lost or injured eye, but it also has a therapeutic use in children for the treatment of amblyopia or lazy eye syndrome.
Eye patches were not only used for covering a missing eye or correcting eye problems as many people believe, but had a more practical purpose for sailors and pilots.

 Eye Conditions & Problems
If one eye is amblyopic and the good eye is covered, the baby may attempt to look around the patch placed over the good eye or object to the patch.
If one eye is looking directly at an object while the other turns in or out, the image that the straight eye sends to the brain will be clear, but the image from the wandering eye will be blurry.
In a farsighted child with crossed eyes, the glasses prescribed are not necessarily to improve vision but rather to relieve the eye of this focusing and secondarily decrease this tendency for the eyes to cross inward.

Atropine eye drops given once a day to treat amblyopia, or lazy eye, the most common cause of visual impairment in children, work as well as the standard treatment of patching one eye.
Although the eye with amblyopia looks normal, there is interference with normal visual processing, which limits the development of a portion of the brain responsible for vision.
Researchers found that 79 percent of those receiving the eye patch were treated successfully, and that 74 percent of those receiving the atropine were treated successfully.

Patching the unaffected eye of children with moderate amblyopia for two hours daily works as well as patching the eye for six hours.
Placing an opaque adhesive patch, or eye bandage, over the unaffected eye for six hours daily is considered one of the standard treatments for moderate amblyopia.
For decades, patching the unaffected eye had been the standard treatment for amblyopia (In March 2002, researchers reported the effectiveness of drug therapy with a cycloplegic eye drop [atropine] that dilates the pupil and blurs the image seen by the unaffected eye).

Hopkins Researchers Find Eye Drops Preferable to Eye Patch in Treating Children's Amblyopia
But the researchers also found parents generally preferred atropine treatment, in which the child receives painless eye drops that blur the unaffected eye, to patching, in which the child's unaffected eye is covered with a patch.
The 215 children in the patching group were asked to wear an eye patch over the unaffected eye for an appropriate number of hours each day.
Researchers found visual acuity in the amblyopic eye improved for most of the children in each group, with 79 percent improvement in the patching group and 74 percent improvement in the atropine group.

Amblyopia can also be treated with special eye drops to blur the vision in the strong eye instead of blocking the vision with an eye patch.
The eye drops are easy to use: parents simply administer the drop in the morning, and they do not need to monitor the child for the rest of the day.
For comparison in the study, 419 children under the age of 7 years were randomly assigned to treatment by eye patch or by eye drops.

 Amblyopia
Amblyopia results from actual atrophy of the visual pathways in the brain that allow an individual eye to "see." That is, because of improper stimulation of the involved eye, the portion of the brain serving that eye does not develop properly.
When the eyes are not aligned, the child's brain will often select one eye to view the world while the other will be "shut off" or "suppressed".
For this reason, eye patches that adhere to the skin around the eye socket are most effective.

Drops as Good as Patch for 'Lazy Eye'
March 13, 2002 -- Eye drops work just as well as wearing an eye patch to correct amblyopia --commonly known as "lazy eye" -- in children, according to a new study.
The condition commonly occurs when the eyes are crossed or misaligned or when there is a significant difference in refractive vision, such as farsightedness or nearsightedness, between the two eyes.
Until now, most eye care professionals treated it by placing a patch over the unaffected eye, forcing the child to use the lazy eye and helping the part of the brain that manages sight to develop more fully.

In general, the main treatment for amblyopia is occlusion therapy, in which the child has to wear a patch over the stronger eye and force him/her to use of the amblyopic (lazy) eye.
Often, PARENTS will fail with the occlusion therapy - They'll say something to the effect that " he just won't leave the patch on." If the parents fail with occlusion, the child is often left with only one good eye.
Typically, an adhesive patch is used for treating amblyopia but sometimes a patch can be placed over the child's glasses, if he/she wears glasses.

They are most commonly found on the ear and around the eye, may be seen at the base of the tail (generally extending part way down the tail), and appear less commonly on the body, generally on the shoulder.
Although patches are not shown in the breed ring and are generally not bred from, they are popular as pets, and are often the first pups selected from a litter.
That theory was disproved, patching is now considered strictly a cosmetic issue, and most breeders place their patched pups in homes as companions.
