 Mideast Outpost: Eyeless in Gaza
The Israeli left, internalizing the world's accusations and deeply alienated from the Jewish heritage that the territories symbolize, soon accepted the Arab argument and worked feverishly, through the media and academia, to demonize the "settlers" in order to justify their mass expulsion.
Gaza did not have large numbers of Jewish residents--8,000, as compared to nearly 200,000 in Judea-Samaria.
Gaza did not have the kind of well-known holy sites that have made it harder to deny the area's Jewish roots, such as the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, the Tomb of Rachel near Bethlehem, or the Tomb of Joseph in Shechem.

The fact the Israelis have been murderously raining thousands of shells on a defenceless Gaza from a safe distance for months is, of course, overlooked.
In explaining the recent resurgence of these (70 in three days), she discerns a familiar pattern: Israeli leader prepares to go or goes overseas to tell Americans or Europeans he has no “partner for peace” while the army sets the scene by killing Palestinians to provoke Qassam attacks on nearby Israeli town of Sderot.
Even as his army ripped into Gaza, the real Olmert was using his platform at a “peace conference” in Jordan to attack Iran and arrogantly assert Israel's supposed historical rights to all of Palestine from the Mediterranean to the Jordan.

 Eyeless in Gaza : Indybay
The Gaza of yesterday is the continuation of a painful process in which the response of Israelis has become - because of the blood - a conditioned reflex that blocks out any other thinking on how to reach a settlement.
Thus, we have gone "Eyeless in Gaza," to quote the title of the Aldous Huxley novel.
Israel is beating its head, and that of its sons, chasing a presumption that is beyond its powers and certainly beyond its national interests.

One drawback to "Eyeless", and perhaps Huxley in general, is that his writing style is somewhat dry and cerebral.
On the whole, "Eyeless in Gaza" can be demanding (it should be read at least twice - once by chapter, and once by date), and because Huxley doesn't spend a lot of time describing place or character, it can be easy to loose sense of the action the first time through.
Eyeless in Gaza is both a character study and a contemplation on the important issues of life that everyone must either spend time considering, or consciously ignore in favour of the easy pleasures.
