Eye Weekly - Eyes on the prize - 11.28.02
One of the nastiest sources of this animosity, targeted this week by a new city of Toronto stickering campaign, is what cyclists facetiously call the "door prize." It's what happens when a car driver or passenger flings open their door without looking and a cyclist, unable to react quickly enough, collides with the door.
There's been particular concern about statistics on the door prize, which, according to the 1999 city report, is the most frequently reported type of car-bike collision in central Toronto (an area south of Bloor, between Dufferin and the Don Valley).
Rob, another veteran courier whose own door prize was dealt by a five-tonne truck on King Street, doesn't hesitate to identify cabs as the perpetrators, though he also believes that cyclists should always be defensive.

When executive producer Henry Hampton and his Boston-based company Blackside began making ''Eyes on the Prize'' in the 1980s, they faced a particularly complex tangle of copyright issues on photographs, TV news footage, and songs beyond what most documentarians face.
The Ford-funded group hopes to raise funds to get the series back in circulation by 2006 for the 20th anniversary of ''Eyes on the Prize,'' forging ahead in the spirit of another civil rights anthem, ''We Shall Overcome'' -- which is also under copyright.

Perhaps the best-known prize is the Nobel, a scientific and cultural award and the brainchild of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite who made a fortune building bombs.
But while winning a prestigious prize often presages good tidings, the cachet associated with an award is often a function of how well-regarded the prior honorees are in their own right.
And for new prizes with scant histories and small selection pools from which to choose winners, the climb is even steeper.
