  Lonely-Isles Eynhallow
The 'holy island' of Eynhallow lies in the Orkney Isles between the Mainland of Orkney and Rousay.
Eynhallow was in all probability the site of one of the earliest monastic settlements in Orkney and may only have been preceded by Christ Church on the Brough of Birsay.
Eynhallow is an island rich in tradition and history and in the past was known as an enchanted isle.

Eynhallow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eynhallow is a small island, part of the Orkney Islands Scotland.
It lies between the two islands of Mainland and Rousay in what is known as the Eynhallow Sound.
It has been uninhabited since suffering as part of the Highland Clearances in 1851.

 Orkneyjar - The Eynhallow Riddle
As you will see elsewhere on this site, the island of Eynhallow was once thought to be the ancestral summer home of the Finfolk before they were forced from it by farmer from Evie.
The Eyhallow incident had some of the older Orcadian folk murmuring about the old ways and whether the missing "tourists" might actually be none other than Finmen returning to their ancient home.
But whatever happened, the Eynhallow incident served to prove that although it may seem that the people of Orkney have been swamped by the modern magic of television, radio, cinema and video, the islands' ancient lore remains - bubbling just out of sight beneath the surface of everyday life.

Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre Ferry Feature Page on Undiscovered Scotland
The ferry serving the three islands is the MV Eynhallow named after the uninhabited island home only to a ruined monastery that lies at the north west end of Eynhallow Sound, between West Mainland and Rousay.
The Eynhallow was built in Bristol in 1987 and intended from the start to bring the roll-on roll-off era to the three islands it serves.
A glance at the timetable suggests that the services offered by the Eynhallow are at least as important in linking Rousay to the smaller islands of Wyre and Egilsay as they are in connecting the three islands to Mainland.

 Eynhallow question
Sinclairs and All, This has a general question regarding the island of Eynhallow in Orkney.
Eynhallow is a very small island apparently with a cave and church (a ruin).
"Eynhallow" means "Sacred/sanctified Nothing", thus is describing by name (in Hebrew and Old English) the type of place confirmed by the grid schematic.

Orkneyjar - Eynhallow - The Holy Isle
Today, numerous accounts describe the site of the kirk as being that of a monastery, and even today the Ordnance Survey maps of the island clearly mark it as such.
However, the earliest surviving account of Eynhallow, in the enigmatic author Jo Ben's Descriptio Insularum Orchadiarum, supposedly written in 1529, makes no mention of a monastery or even the church.
Querying the archaeologists the answer is simple enough: "We don't yet have archaeological evidence to say either way".

 eynhallow
Eynhallow (circled on the map) is a small, uninhabited island in Orkney, located between the Mainland and Rousay.
Eynhallow is home to a 12th century monastry, which was later used as a house until it was evacuated in 1851.
The island's natural history has been monitored by Aberdeen University since 1950, when studies into the fulmar population began.

NEST FAILURES IN THE FULMAR: THE EFFECT OF OBSERVERS
SUMMARY Data were collected over 21 years as part of a long-term study of breeding Fulmars on the uninhabited island of Eynhallow in Orkney.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS We are grateful to the late Miss J. Robertson, Kirkwall, for allowing us to observe Fulmars and to use her house on Eynhallow, Orkney.
Three annual vists were taken to Eynhallow: in May (to count eggs), in July (to determine hatching success), and in August (to deter- mine fledging success).

 BAND WEAR IN THE FULMAR
My thanks are due also to numerous participants in the Eynhallow Fulmar project over the past 28 years and to the late Miss J. Robertson for granting us access to the island of Eynhallow.
The Aberdeen University study of breeding Fulmars in Orkney, be- gun in 1950, continues on the basis of short annual visits to the island of Eynhallow.
In order to calculate survival rates for the Fulmar, which has an average adult life expectancy of 33.92 years in the males and 35.47 years in females (Dunnet and Ollason, 1978), it is necessary to make positive identification of individual banded birds over a long pe- riod of time.

 THE MISTS OF EYNHALLOW
No spirit manifested itself and the ruins of Eynhallow remained as they were, highlighted by the thick, red morning clouds.
Mordred and Canmore were charging about the landscape, as was a mysterious character wearing a mask with three red claw marks down the front; there were Anthropophagi, screaming children and a pale, ill-looking woman in her forties.
Since they had left Eynhallow in the morning, Peter Morwood-Smythe and Lydia Duane had departed to write up their findings on the monk’s journal, and Arthur and Merlin had immersed themselves in Macbeth’s library although both found themselves spending a good deal of the time dozing against the pine chairs.

From the Holy Island of Eynhallow, Scotland comes this lovely Scottish Deerhound stamp.
Eynhallow is one of the numerous islands off the coast of Scotland that issues stamps under their own authority.
They are not really valid postage stamps but if the island is occupied, the stamps can be used to send mail to the mainland, but are not of use beyond that or even to send mail back to the island.
