Eyuphuro reformed in 1998, and producer Roland Hohberg - a fan of Eyuphuro since seeing one of their last international concerts ten years earlier in Germany - helped the group with equipment and finding rooms to rehearse in.
Eyuphuro is also an important representative of traditional Mozambican rhythms such as tufo, namahandga, masepua, djarimane, morro and chakacha.
These are long-established rhythms from the northern province of Nampula, the homeland of most of the Eyuphuro members, and as rhythms learned early in their childhood the songs reflect the shared cultural legacy of the people of Mozambique.

WHAT NEXT? Utopia or the End of Ideology - NI 213 - Reviews
Eyuphuro, from the Macua word meaning whirlwind, is an apt name for a band which whirls you away from the all-too-prevalent perception of Mozambique as a place of war, famine and refugees, to the image of a young and dynamic society.
Eyuphuro's lyrics come from a Mozambican context and from the heart.
And, like Eyuphuro, the Kafala Brothers have a cosmopolitan influence, blending traditional and urban styles and reflecting Congolese, Zairean, Brazilian and Cuban rhythms in a combination of vocals, flute and guitar.

Eyuphuro (which means "whirlwind" in the Macua language) was formed in 1981 by Omar Issa, Gimo Remane and dynamic female vocalist Zena Bacar, and became one of the most successful bands to emerge from Mozambique.
The group comes from the Ilha de Moçambique, the island in the north of the country that was the historic crucible of African, Arabic and Portuguese influences that forged modern Mozambique.
Eyuphuro's songs express the island's traditional way of life, taking the fishermen with their typical canoa sailboats and women with their faces painted with homegrown msiro cosmetic, as their topics and their totems.

Eyuphuro is a time- honored Mozambican act, which was reunited to team up original members including Zena Bacar with newer talents from the Southern African seaside nation.
Like other bands from sub-Saharan Africa, Eyuphuro uses a busy layering of sunny, ebullient guitar tracks, punchy brass accents, and the nasally and at-times somber tones of vocalist Bacar, who made her living fishing before joining Eyuphuro.
The English translations of lyrics sung in the Macua Language (in which Eyuphuro means whirlwind) illustrate the types of misfortune which taint the promise of simple and idyllic living once manifest in these tropic climes - themes include warfare, AIDS, poverty, the decay of social institutions, and the trials of women in modern Mozambican culture.
