Klein/Singer - Political Consulting on the Cheap
Dean is doing a good job of moving people out of the "Undecided" column and into the "Favorable" column, which is something he was having trouble with back in February.
Dean has been a favorite candidate among anti-war Democrats because he believes an imminent threat from Iraq was never proven and therefore the situation did not justify the invasion.
Dean did seek to draw a distinction between his policy and that of the Bush administration by advocating a return to the Clinton policy of "constructive engagement." However, in the context of a world with preventive counter-proliferation warfare this is a distinction not of principle, but only of pragmatic considerations.

 "Power Trippi" by Ezra Klein
Trippi, of course, didn't create Dean's devoted army; central to the story of the Dean campaign was the manner in which the candidate's army of volunteers, bloggers, and donors created itself.
As Vermont's governor, Dean supported balanced budgets, gun rights, the death penalty, the first Gulf War, and welfare reform, and his record was at odds with his newfound constituency, which consisted chiefly of unreconstructed liberals drawn by his opposition to the second Gulf War.

 TAPPED
Instead, it's Dean's decision to spend so much of it on field organizers and state parties, which has ensured there will be less for the closing hours of the 2006, and 2008, elections.
Dean's problem seems to be he will be damned no matter what he does.
Dean is not engaging in luxury spending; he is remedying an emergency situation that has killed Dems for several election cycles now.

 The Washington Monthly
Ezra Klein has an analysis over at Not Geniuses of the possibility of Joe Biden running for the Democratic presidential nomination, and emails to wonder what I think of it.
Basically, Ezra thinks that Biden, as a nice hawkish centrist, would be able to beat the rest of the mainstream field early on and then duke it out with the good doctor down the stretch as the Anybody-But-Dean candidate.
Dean is a differentiated offering, but the rest become much less interesting when their numbers dip.

The RUBINS Family Web: DEANE Family
DEANE Family The name Den or Dene, which is the ancient way of spelling what is now written Deane, makes its appearance in England son after the introduction of surnames.
John and Walter Deane, who are the progenitors of many of those now bearing he name DEANE and DEAN in the United States, came to this country about 1637.
Silas Deane who is probably the most prominent public character of the Deane family, is his great grandfather, James Deane, of Stonington, Connecticut, who may have been a son of Thomas Deane, the emigrant, 1643, to whom Hinman refers.

 Not Geniuses: The Perfect Ticket
If I were Dean, and Les was my VP, he would be on the LBJ memorial world tour as long as he was in office.
This tells folks that Dean is a candidate who doesn't need to be "completed" by the VP nominee and gives him some assassination insurance.
If, as you say, Dean is that weak on national security, homeland security and national defense then the lives of all of us are at stake and you should do what's best for your own personal safety.

Kucinich, not Dean, is the Cranston of 2004.
Dean does not come off as a politician (just as Bush doesn't) and nominating him will shake up the landscape quite a bit, as he does seem able to up turnout quite substantially.
A grassroots campaign of the sort Dean would run would garner quite a bit of press plus rely on different dissemination systems (word of mouth, meetup, internet, etc) than would Kerry's, where he'd be more reliant on traditional paid media.

Not Geniuses: A Disaffected Supporter's Evaluation of Dean
It is to say that Dean's tone, his message, his style of speech and the way he distinguishes himself all point to a candidate who requires a foil, an "other", upon which to build his identity.
Ezra, you may not like Dean, and your reasons may be perfectly valid, but he does appear to be growing on the voters that have been exposed to him the most.
Dean scores on this front more than any political player in the last fifty years, and Dean and Trippi's contentions about political space are incredibly important and resonant.

Dean would not run out of the country when it's citizens needed him to "do the right thing"...in fact the disappointment people see Dean taking this position is exactly why so many are disgusted in Kerry.

 Ezra Klein: Hillary Gone Wild
Ezra points to Hillary obviously setting herself up as the solution to the Democratic problem.
Considering the "ha ha, who is he kidding?" tone you get from reporters when Howard Dean visits Bush-voting states with very popular Dem governors (Kansas, West Virginia) or unpopular GOP governors (Alabama, Missouri), this is absurd.
Reid got the usual "Dean" question from the press audience and replied something to the effect that "you can spin that topic all you want but we're here to talk about legislation".

Unlike Hillary, who inspires a fair amount of distrust, Gore's endorsement of Dean and his alliance with MoveOn have turned the ultimate establishment candidate into something of a left-wing insurgent.
