EZRA STILES (1727-1795), American clergyman and educationalist, seventh president of Yale College, was born on the 29th of November 1727 in North Haven, Connecticut, where his father, Isaac Stiles (d.
He was pastor of the Second Congregational Church of Newport, Rhode Island, from 1755 to 1777; in 1776-1777 he preached occasionally in Dighton, Massachusetts, whither he had removed his family after the British occupation of Newport; and in April 1777 he became pastor of the North Church of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
In 1778 he became president of Yale College and professor of ecclesiastical history there, having insisted that no theological statement be required of him except assent to the Saybrook platform of 1708; in 1780--1782 he was professor of divinity, and he lectured besides on astronomy and philosophy.

Ezra Stiles College is a residential college at Yale University, built in 1961 by Eero Saarinen.
Stiles won the Tyng Cup in 2003, 2004, 2005, but lost its chance for 4 consecutive wins in 2006 when Silliman College was crowned Tyng Cup Champions.
The stuffed moose head that graces the college dining hall was named in honor of a former resident master, "Bart" Giamatti, who in 1977 became Yale's youngest president, and in 1989 was named Commissioner of Baseball.

The Rev. Ezra Stiles (November 29, 1727 - May 12, 1795) was a Congregational clergyman, minister of the Second Congregational Church in Newport, Rhode Island, and President of Yale College from 1778 to 1795.
Stiles also struck up a close friendship with Rabbi Haim Isaac Carigal during Carigal's six month residence in Newport in 1773, the two meeting 28 times (according to Stiles' records) to discuss a wide variety of topics ranging from kaballah to the politics of the Holy Land.
Its mascot is the moose; this arose from the installation of a stuffed moose's head, currently decomposing away in the Ezra Stiles Dining Hall, in honor of former college master and Yale president A. Bartlett Giamatti.

Stiles played important part in the founding of Rhode Island College (now known as Brown University) in 1764.
Sometimes referred to as the "Dr. Stiles Meetinghouse," Stiles was afraid that during the British occupation of Newport the guns of the warships were aimed at the church.
Stiles was not formally dismissed by the congregation until the next minister took charge in May of 1786 - ten years after he left town.

At the same time that Stiles penned a joint letter with Hopkins condemning "the great inhumanity and cruelty" of slavery, and while Stiles himself wrote and preached against the slave trade, Stiles himself owned a slave whom he had obtained directly through trade and held for 20 years.
It appears that Stiles hired his former slave Newport as a servant on the condition that Newport's two year old son, Jacob, would be bonded to and would serve Stiles until age 24 (39).

Kate Ellen Andrias of Silliman College was awarded the prize for "the best Senior essay in the field of humanities" for her essay "Lessons of a Different Sort: The New Haven Teachers' Strike of 1975." The paper was advised by Professor Laura Wexler and submitted to the American studies program.
Three Yale College juniors and one senior were recipients this year: Preston Hopson III '98 of Silliman College, Rachel Kleinfeld '98 of Davenport College, Jacob Sullivan '98 of Calhoun College and Leah Kern '97 of Pierson College.

An Aug. 14 Editorial Observer says that ''8 of Yale's 10 residential colleges are named for slave owners.'' There are 12 residential colleges at Yale.
The two most recent were added in the 1960's: Ezra Stiles College and Morse College.
According to ''Yale, Slavery and Abolition,'' the research paper mentioned in the Editorial Observer, Morse College was named after the inventor of the telegraph, Samuel F. Morse, who published tracts arguing that it was sinful to oppose slavery.
