Topic: F 101 Voodoo

  McDonnell F-101 Voodoo
Initial design work on what would eventually become the Voodoo began just after World War II, in response to a contract by the newly formed USAF for a long-range high performance fighter to escort bombers, much as the P-51 Mustang had done in its time.
While the Voodoo was a moderate success, it may have been more important as an evolutionary step towards the Phantom, the most versatile and successful western fighter design of the 1960s if not all time.
It was not unknown in the early Voodoos for the instrument panel to fall into the pilots lap.

Gander & Area Chamber of Commerce - Aviation Coins
The CF-101 Voodoo was a supersonic all-weather interceptor aircraft operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Forces between 1961 and 1984.
The Voodoo’s primary armament was the nuclear-tipped Genie unguided air-to-air rocket, and there was significant political controversy in Canada about their adoption.
In fact, Gander played such an integral role in Voodoo operations that when the fleet was replaced in the early 1980s by the CF-18 Hornet, a retired Voodoo was donated to the North Atlantic Aviation Museum and remains on public display at the museum today.

The Voodoo was the first production aircraft to go supersonic on its initial flight, on Sept. 29, 1954, more than nine years after work had begun on the XF-88.
Because the Voodoo could so easily reach supersonic speeds in level flight, the sonic booms from test flights often shook homes and broke windows in the areas around the St. Louis factory where Voodoos were produced.
A total of 807 Voodoos were produced in three basic versions: the F-101A/C, F-101B and RF-101A/C (the C models differed only in their structural integrity).

 McDonnell F-101A Voodoo
The McDonnell F-101 Voodoo twin-engined fighter was originally designed as a long range escort fighter to accompany the bombers of the Strategic Air Command if they were ever called upon to carry out their mission of nuclear strike against the Soviet Union.
The Voodoo was destined never to serve in this particular role--it eventually emerged as a tactical reconnaissance aircraft, as a long-range interceptor, and as a nuclear strike aircraft.
However, it was not without its flaws--in all its versions, the Voodoo had a tendency to pitch up into a nose-high attitude without warning, a problem which was caused by the way in which air flowed over its wings and under its high tail.
