Situation: General Dynamics began development of the F-106 “Delta Dart” in 1955, envisioning it as a modification to the F-102Delta Dagger.” The F-102 had first flown in 1953, and with the aid of a few modifications, that aircraft became capable of supersonic flight.

Convair F 106, like the preceding F-102, grew out of the company's delta wing XF-92A an American application of Germany's wartime theories and preliminary testing.
Once within range of the enemy aircraft, the radar on board the Delta Dart locks onto the intruder, guides the interceptor to a favorable attack position, and initiates firing of the missiles.

The last F-102A finally left ANG service in October of 1976, when the 199th FIS of the Hawaii ANG traded in their Delta Daggers for F-4C Phantoms.
The first squadron in Europe to receive the F-102 was the 525th FIS based at Bitburg in West Germany, which received 25 aircraft in early 1959.
Large-scale retirement of the F-102A from the ANG began in late 1969 and continued throughout the 1970s.

Research from the XF-92A test program was used in the development of Convair's two later delta-winged interceptors, the F-102 Delta Dagger and the F-106 Delta Dart, as well as Convair's B-58 Hustler bomber.
The delta wing's large area of 425 square feet (39 m²), thin airfoil cross section, low weight, and structural strength made this a great combination for a supersonic airplane (although the fuselage was of a pre-area rule design).
The XF-92A aircraft was powered by an Allison J-33-A turbojet engine with an afterburner, and was unique in having America's first delta wing.
