FAO, the owner of FAO Schwarz toy stores, said yesterday that the company will file bankruptcy for the second time this year as it struggles to compete with discount stores.
FAO said in November that early holiday sales were less than expected as discounters such as Target cut prices and offered more educational toys, eroding demand at Right Start and Zany Brainy.
FAO was formed after specialty educational-toy retailer Right Start, which Welch headed, bought Zany Brainy out of bankruptcy in September 2001 and purchased FAO Schwarz four months later.

Shares in FAO Schwarz parent FAO Inc. (FAOO :Nasdaq - commentary - research) fell sharply Monday for a second straight session as the children's retailer's cash crisis deepened.
FAO had a loss of $18.8 million, or $4.05 a share, in its second quarter ended Aug. 2, compared to a loss of $18.2 million, or $8.01 a share, loss in the same quarter a year ago.
FAO had an operating loss of $56.7 million in the first half of 2003.

King of Prussia, PA-based FAO Schwarz will meet with major creditors and file a reorganization plan that will allow it to emerge from bankruptcy by the end of the second quarter, according to a company statement.
FAO Inc. reported a net loss of $23.7 million for the third quarter of 2002, compared to a net loss of $9.9 million in the third quarter of 2001.
FAO Schwarz was bought by toy retailer Right Start Inc. for $55 million last year.

FAO Schwarz toys would be sold in local Boston Stores in time for the holiday season under an agreement announced Monday by Saks Inc., the corporate parent for the chain.
FAO Inc., a 141-year-old toy company based in King of Prussia, Pa., filed for protection from its creditors under Chapter 11 of federal bankruptcy law in January, saying it could not compete against discount chains such as Wal-Mart and Toys "R" Us.
