 F11F-1 Shoots Itself Down
During the firing run the F11F continued its descent, and upon arriving at 7,000', the armor-glass windshield was struck, but not penetrated, by an object..
Examination of the F11F established there were three hits—in the windshield, the right engine intake, and the nose cone.
The combination of conditions reponsible for the event was (1) the decay in projectile velocity and trajectory drop; (2) the approximate 0.5-G descent of the F11F, due in part to its nose pitching down from firing low-mounted guns; (3) alignment of the boresight line of 0° to the line of flight.

In April of 1955, the Navy finally admitted that the Tiger was not an upgraded Cougar, and ordered that the aircraft be redesignated F11F-1 (the designation F10F had been taken by the Jaguar variable-sweep fighter).
The range and endurance of the Tiger was found to be inadequate, and the second production batch of Tigers (beginning with BuNo 141728) incorporated additional fuel cells fitted in the intake walls and in the vertical fin, increasing internal fuel capacity from 914 to 1049 US gallons.
Although the Tiger was slightly faster than the Crusader at sea level and had better handling characteristics, the Tiger was almost 300 mph slower than the Crusader at 35,000 feet and had a slightly slower initial climb rate and a shorter combat range.

For a while, Japan seemed to be genuinely interested in the Super Tiger, indicating that they preferred it to the Lockheed F-104A and F-104C, the North American F-100J, and the Northrop N-156F.
At one time, Japan actually seemed on the verge of signing on the dotted line, with the proposed agreement calling for Grumman to build the first few aircraft powered by the J79-GE-7 and equipped with retractable ventral fins to improve stability, and the remainder to be built by a Japanese consortium.

F11F-1 Tiger Comparo Review by "Bondo" Phil Brandt (Collect-Aire vs. Fonderie Miniature 1/48)
Although the Tigers enjoyed a relatively short operational career, mainly due to insufficient J65 power, their handling was honest and quick—some say that the Tiger was the best airplane the Blues ever flew--and the airframes were simple and tough, in the best Grumman “boilerplate” tradition.
When, later, the J79 engine was mated to a few Tiger airframes, performance became phenomenal, approaching mach 2.2.
Although the cast-in, raised detail in the C-A cockpit sidewalls provides (pour moi, at least) not-bad realism, the cockpit floor--same with the roof of the nosegear bay—needs to be fashioned from plastic sheet to blot out the ugly seam running down the center of the fuselage halves.
