NORTHROP P-61C "BLACK WIDOW"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The heavily-armed Black Widow was this country's first aircraft specifically designed as a night-fighter.
In the Pacific, a Black Widow claimed its first "kill" on the night of July 6, 1944.
The Black Widow on display was presented to the U.S. Air Force Museum by the Tecumseh Council, Boy Scouts of America, Springfield, Ohio, in 1958.

As soon as the Black Widow had gotten close enough to its target to make a visual identification, the guns would be aimed and fired by the pilot or by the gunner.
The next version of the Black Widow to enter service was the P-61C, which was a high-performance variant designed to rectify some of the combat deficiencies encountered with the A and B variants.
By mid-1943, even before the combat debut of the Black Widow, both the USAAF and Northrop had come to the same conclusion, and on November 11, 1943, Northrop was given the go-ahead to proceed with an improved Black Widow, the XP-61C.

 NORTHROP P61 Black Widow
Twin-engined and twin-boomed, the Black Widow was armed with a dorsal barbette of four 0.50-in Browning machine guns and two ventrally-mounted 20 mm cannon.
Some 704 Black Widows were built in three distinct variants by Northrop, and the type saw action as a night intruder operating against ground targets as well as in its designated role.
Although the Black Widow was nearly as large as a medium bomber, it was a true fighter.

Black Widows were in service in Europe by July 1944 and shot down four German bombers in their first engagement.
Bv the time Black Widow production was phased out at the end of 1945, 706 had been built, but the type was not quite dead as, following redesign of a P-61A and an XP-61E, 36 examples of a reconnaissance variant, the F-15A Reporter, were built in 1946.
The US Navy received 12 ex-USAAF P-61A Black Widows late in 1945, for use as radar-equipped night fighter trainers for crews of the Douglas F3D Skyknights which were on order.

 Re: Halloran Hospital
That is if you want to go by those dumb (less informative) Air Force (and AAF) designations that the Navy was forced into switching to in 1962.
Being a Navy Airdale and at least starting before '62 the Black Widow will always be an F2T to me. It was used by the Navy and Marine Corps until replaced by Jets in the late 50's.
Speaking of reusing, Northrop's entry for the upcoming multi-service fighter (won by a Lockheed and Boeing consortium's F-22) was the F-23 nicknamed the 'Black Widow'.

US Navy Aircraft Camouflage & Markings 1940-1945   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The author previously published two volumes of Navy Air Colors from Squadron/Signal Publications, and in this edition, he updates his previous works with new photos and data that have become available.
This edition features some very interesting photographs of a variety of USN aircraft from prior to WW2 to the end of the war, including some types that are not usually included in works like this - for example - a P-61 Black Widow redesignated as the F2T-1N!
While some books tend to lean on the fighers, this title gives equal treatment for the patrol, transport, attack, torpedo, etc., types operated by the USN and USMC, as well as a number of aircraft that were on loan to the Navy.

This kit-bashed conversion of Monogram's 1:48th scale P-61A Black Widow represents what a Navy F2T-2 Reporter would have looked like in the guise of VW-4's "Hurricane Chasers."
Even with the "Jet Age" on the horizon, 175 Reporters were ordered, but only 36 were built, and after only 22 months of active service (8th PRS) most were scrapped in 1949.
The Navy had experience operating F2T-1's (P-61C Black Widows) in 1946 and 1947 as transition aircraft to train Marine Crops nightfighter crews in intercept tactics before they moved on to the Grumman F7F Tigercat.
