Douglas F5D Skylancer - carrier-borne fighter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The Douglas F5D was envisaged originally as an improved all-weather development of the F4D (F-6) Skyray, and two prototypes were ordered in 1953 under the designation F4D-2N.
However, substantial changes, including wings of much reduced thickness/chord ratio, a lengthened fuselage, revised vertical tail surfaces and the introduction of a new cockpit canopy brought the rede-signation F5D-1 (subsequently named Skylancer) before the first flight was recorded on 21 April 1956.
This termination was not due to shortcomings in the aircraft, but rather.to the realisation that the performance of the F5D was little better than that of the Chance Vought F8U-1 which was on the point of entering service.

The F5D-1 Skylancer had a wing planform very similar to that projected for Dyna-Soar; NASA Flight Research pilot Neil Armstrong recognized that the Skylancer could be used to study Dyna-Soar abort procedures.
Milt and William Dana began to fly the escape test maneuver in the F5D-1 Skylancer that Neil had developed to escape the launch pad in event of an emergency.
In May 1970 the Douglas F5D-1 Skylancer (NASA 802) was retired and donated to the Neil A. Armstrong Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio, to rest beside the light plane in which Armstrong learned to fly.

The prototype was then fitted with the commercial version of the J79, the CJ805-3, in 1958, and also carried a wooden test model of the turbofan derivative, the CJ805-23, on an underwing pylon for aerodynamic tests.
Production Skylancers were to feature armament of four retractable unguided rocket launchers with a total of 72 rockets or four 20 millimeter cannon, plus two Sparrow II medium-range semi-active radar guidance AAMs.
The Skylancer actually did well during its evaluation, but the Navy was acquiring the new Vought F8U Crusader in parallel, the Crusader was clearly the better bet, and the Skylancer program was cancelled.

Anigrand 1/72 XF5D-1 Skylancer, previewed by Mark Soppet
The Skylancer’s biggest flaw is that it arrived on the scene too late.
Its performance was similar to the Crusader (which had flown nearly a year before the Skylancer) and the F11F Tiger (which had flown in July 1954.) The Skylancer didn’t receive funding for further production, and a proposed Skylancer with a J79 engine (which would have surpassed the Crusader in most areas) didn’t proceed.
Of the four Skylancer prototypes, two were transferred to NASA after the program’s cancellation.

Despite the Skylancer's abilities, the eventual arrival of the Phantom in numbers put an end to F-7 operations by 1966-67.
The Argentine Navy was more reluctant to dispose of its Skylancers, as they represented the only carrier-based supersonic capability that the service was ever likely to have.
The de Mayo's sortie early on in the conflict led to an encounter between several Skylancers and Sea Harriers from HMS Hermes, but despite scoring several victories, the surviving F-7s are unable to strike at the British fleet.

Le Skylancer était équipé d'un système de commande de vol développé par Douglas semblable à celui du F4D-1.

An improved version of the F4D Skyray, the "Super-Skyray," was named the F5D Skylancer, but never went into production.
Because its wing planform was similar to the Air Force’s Dyna-Soar “spaceplane,” the NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) here at Edwards used an F5D to establish approach glide slopes for dead stick landings and to develop abort procedures.
Following the demise of the X-20 program, NASA Dryden used the jet as a chase plane and an approach test vehicle for the Lifting Body program, and it was not retired until 1970.

Douglas built the F5D Skylancer prototype used in the development of the Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar, developed the Thor missile (precursor of the Delta, and built the third stage of the Saturn V. Douglas was chosen to build the Mercury and Gemini spacecraft.
Following the merger of the two companies, McDonnell Douglas was contracted to convert of its Saturn V third stages into the Skylab space station.
