The Grumman F9F Cougar (redesignated the F-9 Cougar in the 1962 joint service aircraft designation system) was a aircraft carrier-based fighter aircraft for the United States Navy.
The only version of the Cougar to see combat was, oddly enough, the TF-9J trainer; they were used in the airborne command role, directing airstrikes against enemy positions in South Vietnam during 1966 and 1967.

The maiden flight of the XF9F-6 was made on September 20, 1951.
Although the same designation series was used for both straight and sweptwing versions, Grumman continued their cat nomenclature and called their new machine the Cougar.
Cougars were some of the most colorful planes in the Navy's inventory in the fifties and sixties, and I've chosen several colorful versions.

It remains something of a mystery why the Navy did not renumber the Cougar as the F11F-1, which was the next numerical designation available.
The first unit to receive the F9F-6 was VF-32, which converted to the Cougar in November of 1952, too late to fly combat sorties in Korea.
Sixty F9F-6 Cougar airframes were fitted by Grumman with a camera installation in the nose in place of the cannon, and were delivered under the designation F9F-6P between June 1954 and March 1955.

All Cougars were armed with four 20-mm cannon and had two wing racks for 1,000-lb bombs or, more usually, 150-US gal drop tanks.
In service, a number of F9F-6s were fitted with a UHF homing antenna in a faring beneath the nose and a few had an in flight refueling probe installed in the nose.
Developed in great haste during the Korean War as a stop-gap design to provide the Navy with a fighter having performance comparable to that of the MIG-15, the Cougar was made ready for squadron assignment in a remarkably short time.

The F9F was a transitional aircraft for Grumman.
Finally, the Cougar would be the first to employ a new weapon of the era, the guided missile, with the installation of the first Sidewinders.
The F9F Cougar entered service too late to see combat in Korea (though it made it into theater just as the treaty was signed) and left service too early for Vietnam, though a few TF-9J trainers were pressed into Forward Air Control (FAC) duties early in that war.

The Grumman F9F-8B (F-9) Cougar was the final single-seat version of the F9F-6 line of carrier fighters that flew as the straight wing Panther in 1947.
The F9F-8B Cougar at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum (PRNAM) was graciously donated and transported by the city of Richmond, Virginia.

Late in their service lives, many F9F-2 and F9F-5 Panthers received the same AN/ARA-25 UHF set as was fitted to most F9F-6 through F9F-8 Cougars.
This unit was housed in the nose and required a large fairing to be applied to the bottom of the fighter's gun nose.
It will also replace the much too narrow fairing on the Fonderie-Miniature F9F-8 Cougar kit.
