The rise of professional football in the 1880s meant that amateur teams were increasingly squeezed out of the FA Cup.
The heyday of the FA Amateur Cup was in the 1950s when the Wembley finals regularly attracted crowds of 100,000.
It has been superseded by the FA Trophy for the higher level non-league teams and the FA Vase for the rest.

 FA Amateur Challenge Cup 1894-1974
The top prize in English amateur football was the Amateur Cup which was introduced in 1894.
From 1949 the Final was played at Wembley and at the height of it's popularity the Amateur Cup final was able to attract a capacity 100,000 crowd every year from 1951 to 1955.
Its status took a dent in 1969 when the FA Challenge Trophy was introduced for the top semi-professional non-league clubs who were ineligble to compete in the Amateur Cup.

THE Lancashire Football Association Amateur Cup fifth round saw two of our three local teams go into the last eight of this competition out of well over two hundred entrants.
In the Adam and Gaskell Senior Challenge Cup third round Ingleton deservedly beat Caton United 3-1 but they had to be at their best to do so.
Steve Mounsey opened the scoring for Ingleton followed by Duncan Sullivan and young Tommy Murray but the goal of the game was scored for Caton United by John Longhorn who beat keeper Graham Kellett from fully 30 yards.

The 1971-72 season saw them back at Wembley once again in the FA Amateur cup Final, Hendon were the opponents and picked up the trophy with a 2-0 victory over us.

The FA cup was dominated by Public school and University sides in its early days.
The cup was passed from pillar to post for a few years although Sheffield Wednesday did get their fingerprints on it more than once, 1896 and 1899.
Card 13, 1892 should get a mention as being the last time the Cup was played at The Oval which, with but a few exceptions, had been the home of the FA Cup final for many years.
