FASA is a game company, and "game company" is pretty much synonymous with a company that is chronically underfunded and always in a tight cashflow situation.
FASA did an internal audit of accounts and uncovered a lot of foreign payments that had never been accounted to me, and presented a statement sheet showing that they now owed me $18,200.00; though that accounting omitted royalties for three books.
FASA's editor and I did discuss and negotiate some alternative contract adjustments that would allow me to continue working on Btech, but these had to be taken to her bosses.

FASA Corporation was founded by Jordan Weisman and Ross Babcock, creating such popular universes as BattleTech, Shadowrun, Earthdawn, Renegade Legion, etc. The first edition of BattleTech rules was released as "BattleDroids" in 1984, making 2004 is the 20th anniversary of BattleTech.
In the late 80's, FASA was experimenting with Virtual Reality, and that would later grow into VWE (Virtual Worlds Entertainment) and culminated with it's first "BattleTech Center" in Chicago in 1990, with later centers being built across the U.S., and as far away as Yokohama Japan.
FASA Interactive approached Microsoft, and one thing led to another, and in 1998 MS acquired FASA Interactive.

I don't know, I'm not the management of FASA who have >decided this, and have more information on the topic than you or me. Yes the management has a lot more information than you or I. And I don't want to see them divert resources from other things that produce the games themselves.
And I read an interview with one of the head people there (can't remember her name off hand) that talked about the FASA Interactive sale and the money giving them the ability to do some more good stuff.

FASA is the company that created Battletech, Shadowrun, Earthdawn, Crimson Skies, and several other role-playing and board games.
According to the company statement, the closure is due to major changes in the adventure gaming world over the 20 years that FASA has been in business, and the founders of the company feel that it is time to pursue other interests.
