The FAW Premier Cup (formerly the FAW Invitation Cup) is a Welsh football cup competition, organised annually by the Football Association of Wales since 1997.
Since the clubs playing in English leagues were excluded from playing in the Welsh Cup in 1996, the FAW needed another competition where their best teams could compete together.
The FAW Premier Cup is broadcast on BBC Wales.

Uefa also refused to recognise the FAW Premier Cup as a qualifying tournament for the Champions’ League or the Uefa Cup.

The Welsh Cup is a knock-out football competition contested annually by teams from Wales and neighbouring parts of England.
Only Welsh teams (since the mid-1990s, only teams in the League of Wales) can progress to the UEFA Cup through winning the Welsh Cup.
The Football Association of Wales is the organising body of this competition, which has been run (except for the world wars) every year since the creation of the FAW in 1876.

 History of the FAW Premier Cup
The FAW Premier Cup began its life as the FAW Invitation Cup in season 1997/98 before changing to its present title when the separate company that operates the competition, the FAW Premier Cup Ltd, negotiated a new three-year contract with BBC Wales for the television rights.
The original FAW Invitation Cup consisted of 8 teams, who were; Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham, Merthyr Tydfil, Barry Town, Bangor City, Newtown and Cwmbran Town but when the new contract was agreed the number increased to 12, with 4 more LOW clubs joining.
The contract for 2004/2005 and for the current season see 16 clubs involved with 11 from the Welsh Premier League, the 3 Football League clubs and the two with the best previous season playing record from Colwyn Bay, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport County.

With the amalgamation of the Cup Winners Cup and the UEFA Cup, the rules regarding qualification have been amended for next season.
As you can imagine I’ve been phoning the FAW Offices frequently over far more years than I can remember, but the other day, for the first time ever, I was greeted by the receptionist with the words ‘Bore Da, Swyddfeydd Cymdeithas Pêl-droed Cymru’.
In all the years of phoning the FAW it was indeed the first bilingual greeting I had ever heard in the ‘Corridors of Power’.

Since the 6 English system Welsh teams were chucked out of the Welsh FA Cup in the early ninties the BBC has been without a strong Welsh cup to televise.
As much as the WPL think they should be televised and ask the bbc why they aren't (you might as well ask why the DME/W isn't televised) the BBC refuse to televise WPL sides in a cup that can consist of Welsh league clubs too.
They play in two group stages with the top WPL side and the 3 league sides being seeded and saved for the finals.

For those across the border who didn't know, Rhyl beat Welsh Premier champions and relegation threatend Barry Town 8-0 in the quarter final while Swansea struggled to a 4-2 victory away at Caersws with the score being 2 goals each at 90 minutes.
If Cardiff play a weakend side they will not be in the final, if they play Earnshaw, Gabbidon and the rest then i think it will be a cracking game but i doubt it.
