Zenit made an explosive start, defeating FC Dinamo Moskva 4-1 on their way to another three wins, though they did suffer a surprise defeat by FC Tom Tomsk, their only win of the season.
Reigning champions FC Lokomotiv Moskva coach Yuri Semin was appointed the new national coach to succeed Georgi Yartsev, after 18 years with the club he helped to their first post-Soviet Union title in 2002.
Dinamo's capital rivals FC Spartak Moskva, are a point ahead of them in third place having won the derby between the two sides 5-1 - one of the biggest losses in Dinamo coach and former Spartak player Oleg Romantsev's illustrious career.

Goalkeeping coach Aleksandr Yanovski will prepare Alania for Saturday's league game at FC Tom Tomsk before Shum takes charge next week ahead of the 9 July meeting with PFC CSKA Moskva.
At Maccabi Haifa FC, he was the first man to lead an Israeli club into the UEFA Champions League group stage, in the 2002/03 campaign.

Karnilenka, on loan at FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk from FC Dynamo Kyiv, has scored seven goals in ten Ukrainian Premier League matches since 1 March.
But Baidaychnyy has left out several experienced players - Dmitry Rovneiko from FC Torpedo Moskva, Aleksandr Khatskevich from FK Venta, Vladimir Korytko who plays for FC Terek Grozny, FC Sokol Saratov goalkeeper Gennadi Bliznyuk and Leonid Kovel from FC Dinamo Minsk all miss out.

It is the first time in more than a year that Spartak have topped the table, after adding wins against FC Terek Grozny and FC Tom Tomsk to the three they had already claimed this season: five from eight games being the most in the division.
The reigning champions have since drawn 1-1 at Zenit and swept aside FC Rostov 4-0 in a game which marked the return of Gennadi Stepushkin to the Rostov helm after he was forced to step down temporarily to recover from a heart problem.
Fifth-placed FC Lokomotiv Moskva remain the only side yet to lose this season, although they came close to conceding that record against FC Amkar Perm, when Marat Izmailov scored with six minutes remaining to salvage a point after Konstantin Paramonov’s 23rd-minute opener.
