FCNL is also the oldest registered, ecumenical lobby in Washington, DC.

FCNL played a pivotal role in the creation of the Peace Corps, was instrumental in lobbying for the creation of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, played an important role in lobbying for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and participated in efforts to oppose both the first (1991) and second (2003) Iraq wars.

FCNL leadership in the Citizens Budget Campaign early in the year was instrumental in producing a budget briefing packet entitled “Budgeting for the Common Good,” which identified important alternative approaches to balancing the federal budget while providing sufficient resources for meeting continuing social, economic, and environmental challenges.

FCNL uses the report on the outlays of the previous year to estimate the portion of federal income tax dollars spent for military purposes in that year.
Finally, FCNL's analysis includes spending for past military activities such as the portion of the interest paid on the national debt which can be attributed to past military spending and veterans services.
FCNL updates the figure by factoring in the deficits that are added to the debt each year, and the portion of each year's spending that is military-related.
