Feature Driven Development (FDD) and Agile Modeling
FDD was first applied on a 15 month, 50-person project for a large Singapore bank in 1997, which was immediately followed by a second, 18-month long 250-person project.
An FDD project starts by performing the first three steps in the equivalent of the RUP’s Inception phase or XP’s “iteration 0”, the goal being to identify the scope of the effort, the initial architecture, and the initial high-level plan.
FDD’s practice pertains to coding but does not to modeling, on a FDD project people work together in teams to model, along the lines of AM’s model with others practice, and therefore several people will be working on your shared collection of modeling artifacts.

Extending FDD for UI : White Paper : uidesign.net
FDD offers programmers the job satisfaction of knowing that they got to be "complete" at least once every two week, delivering a client valued piece of code.
FDD for UI utilizes readily available tools and through the use of statechart modeling, greatly enhances the quality of the deliverables through improved understanding of the application across the whole development team.
FDD is in use on internet projects across the world, and is helping those project to deliver "frequent, tangible, working results," "on time, on budget, with agreed function".

The Coad Letter: Process Edition, Issue 118, The Case for Class Ownership, by David J. Anderson   (Site not responding. Last check: )
FDD has chosen to adopt class ownership as a constraint, whilst other methods have chosen to eliminate it by abolishing such a policy and allowing any developer to make the necessary changes in any class.
In FDD each class is treated as its own component and special care is taken to maintain the architecture and public interface to that class.
FDD believes that the long term cost of other mechanisms is greater than the cost of introducing the policy constraint of class ownership.

FDD was first used with a team of 16-20 developers of varying abilities, cultural backgrounds and experience: four chief programmers (CP's), sixteen class owners split into User Interaction (UI), Problem Domain (PD) and Data Management (DM) teams.
FDD does not define the mechanisms or level of formality for unit testing; it leaves that to the chief programmer to do what is appropriate.
The main minds behind FDD are Jeff De Luca and Peter Coad with contributions from M.A. Rajashima, Lim Bak Wee, Paul Szego, Jon Kern and Stephen Palmer [Coad].

 Feature Driven Development (FDD)
FDD was developed by Nebulon's Jeff De Luca over his years of extensive IT and project management experience.
FDD is model-driven and it uses a breadth, not depth, modelling exercise at the start of a project as a knowledge transfer and requirements analysis activity that makes the rest of the processes work as well as they do.
FDD subscribes to those four statements and it isn't the same as all other Agile methods.

Advantages of Time Division Duplex (TDD) for Broadband Wireless in Last-Mile Applications
Using the FDD method, a distinct frequency channel is assigned to both the transmitter and the receiver.
FDD is typically used in applications that require an equal up- and downlink bandwidth, as all TDM voice applications do.
Due to the symmetric nature of FDD transmission channels, and the FDD legacy as duplex method of choice for TDM voice applications, FDD transmission channels are always of equal size (50% for UL and 50% for DL).

Delivering Real Business Value using Feature Driven Development
FDD lends itself readily to the use of repositories or knowledge bases of information and the publishing and dissemination of that information which ensures high visibility and reporting of results.
When planning an FDD project the basic rule of thumb is that for every week spent in the up-front design process there will be 3 months of development time required to build the system.
Since adopting FDD we have had clients compliment us on how well our projects have been run and in particular how we have been able to engage everyone from their organisation in their projects.

Brad Appleton's ACME Blog: FDD - an agile alternative to XP
FDD is quite agile while still employing of many of the traditional practices that agile skeptics are probably more accustomed to seeing.
FDD does conduct up-front planning, design and documentation and relies very heavily upon domain modeling.
FDD also uses feature-teams with chief architects/programmers and traditional code-ownership and code-review (as opposed to pair-programming and refactoring).

FDD was first introduced in 1999 via Peter Coad, Eric Lefebvre and Jeff De Luca's book, Java Modeling in Color with UML (Prentice Hall, 1999), a combination of the software process followed by De Luca's company and Coad's concept of features.
FDD was first applied on a 15-month, 50-person project for a large Singapore bank in 1997, immediately followed by a second, 18-month, 250-person project.
FDD takes a different approach in that it assigns classes to individual developers, so if a feature requires changes to several classes, the owners of those classes must work together as a feature team to implement it.

FDD is an all inclusive methodology in that all the stakeholders in a project get involved in developing the feature list; that way there are no surprises for any of them when the thing is finally built.
FDD does however require street-smarts to be able to decide where, how and to what extent to adopt and adapt FDD to your particular business.

 UTRA FDD Release 4 Blockset
Based on the Release 4 3GPP specifications, the 3GPP UTRA FDD Release 4 Blockset enables an engineer to rapidly assemble transmitter channel models and therefore concentrate on the development of proprietary receivers, and in doing so provides a quick and easy way of becoming familiar with the specifications.
The UTRA FDD Release 4 Blockset provides an invaluable educational tool to aid in familiarisation with the UTRA FDD specifications.
The UTRA FDD blocks can be used with blocks from other Simulink libraries, such as the DSP and Communications blocksets, so that more complex, proprietary models can be realised.

CommsDesign - Solving FDD Compliance Issues with 3GPP Libraries
FDD provides a similar operating format for 3G operators and equipment developers (separate bands for transmit and receive operation) while TDD calls for carriers to abandon traditional approaches and use a single 5 MHz channel for transmit and receive.
But while the FDD format is similar in nature to existing cellular approaches, the complexity of an FDD signal format complying with the 3GPP specifications imposes new performance requirements for linearity and dynamic range of amplifiers and other RF components.
From the perspective of RF/analog engineers, the task of designing to 3GPP FDD compliance testing becomes much more complicated if they have to construct a specific signal, even before an EVM measurement can be made.

The key to FDD is process one, the key to process one is having a great object modeller and a great project manager.
But the qualities of FDD are not as important as whether FDD is appropriate to the type of development you do and will help you to achieve what it is you hope to gain from adopting FDD.

FDD also has defined activities with explicit entry and exit criteria, so has a higher level of ceremony than many Agile methods.
He concluded that FDD fills certain process gaps without giving up Agility, summed up by his observation that "FDD is Football-Driven Development (and XP is Rugby)".
It is worth noting that Appleton recommends FDD as an Agile method suitable for a large projects and companies, especially those striving for CMM/CMMI certification, suggesting that FDD may be worth a look for those in a position to choose or recommend an enterprise development approach.

Foundation Series: Feature Driven Development (FDD) Explained | Tyner Blain
FDD is a process that begins with high level planning to define the scope of the project, which then moves into incremental delivery.
FDD, by comparison, defines the overall scope of the project at the beginning, but does not define the details.
When we look at these approaches, we see that FDD tries to combine the best part of a waterfall process (good planning) with the best part of XP (continuous improvement through iteration).

 Feature-Driven Development
FDD is a design-oriented agile process developed by Jeff De Luca that follows the belief that a strong design (yet one that allows room for flexibility) will create a process that is better managed and thus more efficient.
The project is divided into "features," which are small pieces of the project that possess some customer value.
FDD creates design, code, and code inspection schedules that may seem strangely un-agile, but these schedules lack the depth and mounds of paperwork associated with a system completely specified in the requirements phase, instead relying on people and their roles to address the details as needed.
