The FED 2, which was produced from 1958 through 1963, is the first 35mm Soviet made camera that I have owned.
The FED 2 features a cloth focal plane shutter, with speeds ranging from 1/30 sec to 1/500 sec plus B. The camera has X-sync flash, and therefore will work well with any modern electronic flash that can be attached to the camera via a standard PC socket.
Also, anyone interested in acquiring or using a FED camera should be warned that under no circumstance should he or she ever attempt to change the shutter speed setting unless the shutter is cocked.

My FED 3 operates relatively smoothly, but then again I had the luxury of cherry-picking it out of several at a camera fair in St. Paul in 2003.04.

The FED is can be operated manually, but also has an automatic mode of operation.
I think the camera was designed in the end of the 1950's, and therefore, technically it is not very advanced compared to today's cameras: for example, the 'manual' mode of operation works by chosing a lens aperture between 1/2.8 to 1/16, at a fixed shutter speed of 1/30 s.
Also, mechanically the camera is not very well built, and light leaks are common (as you probably can see on my pictures).

I won't delve too deeply into the somewhat sordid history of the FED. Suffice it to say that the FED factory in Kharkov was an orphanage-turned-work-commune named for Felix E. erzhinsky, founder of the original Soviet Secret Police.
The FED 2 feels great in the hands, it's nicely balanced and compact, with a comfortable vulcanite exterior and a smooth, snappy shutter (a little softer and smoother on the 2e than the 2c).
One of my favorite and least favorite parts of the FED 2 as well as the Zorki is the diopter adjustment lever which is nice to have but easy to get stuck fiddling with if you know what I mean.

Now to my questions, I have bought my second RF camera (the first is a Yashica Electro 35 GSN) and it ended up in a FED 2 Type B with a “original” FED lens (FED 1:2,8 F=50mm).
I also bought a Jupiter-8 lens in mint condition because I was told it would fit on my FED. The camera is in excellent cosmetic condition and everything seems to work, it is supposed to be serviced by the seller and I have no doubt in that.
I have heard that there is a need for adjustments after lens changing to old Russian RF cameras but is that an issue for even older models then the FED 2 Type B? It never happened to me. You'll need an adjustment for sure with early fed 1.
