FFI, the Squeak Foreign Function Interface, is used to call functions located in shared libraries that are not part of the Squeak VM nor its plugins.
Technically what happens is you define what the interface is, the parameters, types etc. Then when you make the call, the FFI logic assembles the data from the Squeak Objects into the proper structures according to the routine calling conventions for your architecture, and of course manages the return values.
FFI is probably the easiest way to do the things it does, but it does have limitations...

All other prizes are the responsibility of the Organising Club; as a guide-line it is suggested that prizes are awarded to the top 12.5% overall, and to the winning boat (if possible the first three) in each race; and that there might be a small souvenir for each helms person and crew.

Foreign function interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It should be noted that despite the name, FFIs are not necessarily restricted to function calls; many FFIs permit method calls on objects; and some even permit migration of non-trivial datatypes and/or objects across the language boundary.
In most cases, a FFI is defined by a "higher-level" language, so that it may employ services defined and implemented in a lower level language, typically a systems language like C or C++.
The primary function of a FFI is to mate the semantics and calling conventions of one programming language (the host language, or the language which defines the FFI), with the semantics and conventions of another (the guest language).

Larceny Note #7: Foreign Function Interface
The data conversion part of the FFI must convert host language representations to foreign language representations, or vice versa, or signal an error if this is not possible.
In Larceny's FFI, the conversion code, the context switch code, and the parameter setup code are all separated, but they run in sequence during a call-out or call-back without any other code intervening, and it's therefore useful to consider them a unit.
The upper level of the FFI may support some of these types and is expected to convert them as appropriate before passing them to the lower-level procedures.

Larceny Note #7: Foreign Function Interfaces
Larceny's Foreign Function Interface (FFI) is a low-level interface and is not primarily intended for direct use by the programmer.
Many Common Lisp FFIs and some Scheme FFIs have elaborate mechanisms for defining foreign structured types; these mechanisms usually take the form of a structure definition language (a syntactic form) coupled with primitives for explicitly allocating and deallocating foreign structures.
On the very lowest level, the FFI must construct a procedure call in the foreign language from a function address and a list of actual argument represented as foreign-language objects.
